Sergio Perez has done five races so far in the 2026 Formula 1 season since his return to the sport with Cadillac following a forced one-year hiatus after being fired by Red Bull Racing at the end of 2024. He is more than satisfied with his performance.
Cadillac have
opted for experience when they signed Perez, as they also signed Valtteri Bottas as his teammate, but the Mexican has shown so far that he has the measure of the Finn, managing to extract better results so far.
In Canada, Perez came close to making SQ2 in Sprint Qualifying and was running close to the top ten in the Sprint while he was having a solid Grand Prix on Sunday before the suspension on his MAC-26 failed.
He said after the race: “I’m very happy with my performances. I’m happy I came back and have proven to myself that I’m one of the best out there. That to me is really nice, and I’m very happy with the level of driving I’m doing."
Perez credited his team for the upgrade they brought in Miami, which pushed them up the order; he added: “I think we’ve done a massive step. I think this has been our most competitive weekend of all, so plenty of positives to take.”
However, Cadillac remain a new team with little to no operational experience, with the suspension failure in Canada probably caused by that, and Perez pointed out that area as an issue the American team should focus on.
He said: “I’m impatient at the moment with the operational side. I think it’s something that we have to improve, and we’re in a massive hurry because we’re not maximizing the result.
“I think we’re making progress on performance, which is very positive, but on the operational side it’s something that we are lacking tremendously, and we have to find our way for the European season now," Perez concluded.
Maybe this impatience is behind some recent rumors that Perez may be shopping around for another race seat and that some teams are talking to him. (Quotes by Agnes Carlier)
