Toto Wolff believes Ferrari's car upgrade strategy in the 2026 Formula 1 season is not smart and that they should pace themselves instead of throwing new parts at their SF-26.
Ferrari has been the team to bring the most upgrades so far among the top four teams, while Mercedes have only introduced one major upgrade to their W17.
Despite that, Mercedes have been somehow able to keep their rivals at arm's length, with George Russell winning the 2026 Austrian Grand Prix on Sunday despite Red Bull Racing bringing a massive upgrade to their RB22, which Max Verstappen put to good use to finish second after threatening Russell for most of the race.
Ferrari, on the other hand, unleashed a considerable upgrade for the 2026
Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix which Lewis Hamilton won, but the Scuderia went on to struggle in Austria.
Wolff commented on his team's upgrade plans; he said: "We’re running hard on updates in the [wind] tunnel, and on paper we have already a decent upgrade, but we’re not deploying yet."
But he then warned that Ferrari may have gone the wrong way with the development of their SF-26 being aggressive.
"You have to do it at the right time," Wolff warned. "Ferrari have been throwing things at their car massively; I guess they will be running out of cost cap soon, because we couldn’t do it, because we simply haven’t got the margin financially. Let’s see where that leads them.
"The only ones who are not slowing down is Ferrari," he went on. "I mean, between McLaren, Red Bull, and ourselves, you can see we had one big one that we introduced in Montreal," added Wolff.
"We have small parts that come in between. I think the same for Red Bull and McLaren. It's just Ferrari, who seems to be limitless in that way," Wolff concluded. (Reporting by Agnes Carlier)
