George Russell ended his long wait for a second victory of the 2026 Formula 1 season after producing a flawless Alain Prost-like drive to win the Austrian Grand Prix from pole position and revive his championship challenge.

The Mercedes driver controlled the race at the Red Bull Ring, holding off the pressure behind to claim his second career victory in Austria and move ahead of Lewis Hamilton into P2 in the 2026 Formula 1 Drivers' Championship. Points leader Kimi Antonelli maintained his title advantage with another podium finish in third.
Russell's triumph ended a frustrating spell that followed his season-opening victory in Australia. Since then he had watched team-mate Antonelli win five races in succession before Hamilton broke Mercedes' winning streak with Ferrari in Barcelona. Austria marked Russell's return to the top step after a weekend in which he converted pole into a commanding victory.
Speaking over the radio on the slow down lap, from the car, Russell revealed: "My drinks system failed, nice race for it to do so! I'm a little bit thirsty..."
The Briton admitted the victory carried extra significance after several difficult weekends: "It’s incredible to be back on the top step. It's been a little while, so I will definitely enjoy this one this evening!"

Tough races definitely test you psychologically

It was Russell's seventh Grand Prix victory, and he is now 40 points adrift of Mercedes teammate on the points table. He continued: "A lot of hard work with my team got us back on track. Obviously it was a tricky run of form at one point. Max and Red Bull were incredibly quick this weekend, so kudos to them. I had to push every single lap and I knew how quick the guys were behind.
"Kimi has been extraordinarily quick this season, so every lap I was looking at the timing board. We pitted on the early side for the last stop, so I knew it would be a long stint, but the team timed it to perfection."
After delivering a calculated drive in the style Formula 1 legend Prost aka 'The Professor' would be proud of, Russell said the difficult period since his Australian victory had only strengthened him: "The tough races definitely test you psychologically. These last two weekends for me have been vitally important to remind myself I can do it.
"Single lap, race pace, was very strong this weekend, on a track that was probably not well suited to my style. I look forward to heading to Silverstone!" said the Briton, ahead of his home race next weekend.

Perfect execution

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff hailed Russell's composed performance, describing it as one of the Briton's most complete weekends in Formula 1.
"Since Q3 yesterday until now, perfect execution," Wolff said. "He was quick, managed the tyres well, cold blooded. Really happy for him. He knows he can drive fast and sometimes you just have to put one and one together. Just drive! It's never good when racing drivers think too much!
"We said the best race is the quickest race. Don't manage. Make sure you don't kill the rears, but we are doing this by pushing the front tyres and that's what he did, not thinking too much about strategy or the gap behind. Just go, go, extract the maximum from the car and that's what he did," added Wolff.
Russell's victory injects fresh momentum into both his own title bid and Mercedes' campaign ahead of next weekend's British Grand Prix at Silverstone, where he arrives buoyed by his strongest performance since the opening round of the season.
