Impressive young Spanish driver Carlos Sainz will start Sunday’s Monaco Grand Prix from the pit-lane in his Toro Rosso after being given a penalty after qualifying on Saturday.
The 20-year-old son of former world rally champion Carlos Sainz was investigated for missing a weighbridge call during the Q1 mini-session during qualifying in which he was ninth fastest.
"The driver failed to stop for weighing during Q1 when signalled to do so by the red traffic light. The car was not returned to the FIA garage and work was undertaken," said the stewards in a statement.
"In accordance with Article 26.1 (iv) of the FIA Formula 1 Sporting regulations the driver is required to start from the pit-lane."
Sainz complained that he was unable to see the light that signalled him to stop, "I cannot see the red light when I pit. I cannot see that light. I saw it late, but then the next one I stopped in the weighbridge and it was fine, so I don't think there should be a big problem "
Lotus driver Romain Grosjean will also move down the grid due to a gearbox change penalty.
