George Russell was totally flabbergasted after his retirement from the 2026 Canadian Grand Prix and already seems to be giving up on his Formula 1 Title chances.
You can't blame Russell for feeling that way, especially as he was talking just after his W17 broke down in the middle of a tense fight with teammate Kimi Antonelli.
"It feels like it is [Antonelli's Title] to lose now," Russell told Sky Sports Italy after the
Canadian Grand Prix.
While Russell said
he felt someone doesn't want him to fight for this year's Title, he lamented how unlucky he has been so far with reliability issues and that unlucky Safety Car in Japan all derailed his season.
"I can't seem to catch a break," the Briton told
Sky Sports F1 in Montreal. "I would have loved for this [power unit failure] to happen in Miami when I was sixth, not here in Montreal leading. Or the Safety Car in Japan coming out one lap before it did.
"[There was] the failure in Qualifying in China. Even in Melbourne, without that red flag in Q1, Kimi would have started last. Something's not going my way at the moment.
"I don't wish any bad luck on anybody. I just want to fight hard and fight fair. We have equal opportunity, but right now lady luck is not on my side," Russell lamented in conclusion.
It must be hard for Russell to accept his current situation. He did the hard graft at Williams between 2019 and 2021 and earned the promotion to Mercedes for the 2022 F1 season.
But then, just as he joined them, Mercedes stopped winning, but Russell did his job, beating Lewis Hamilton and taking over the team leader role when the seven-time F1 Champion left for Ferrari.
In 2026, Russell knew Mercedes had a winner in the W17 and definitely fancied his chances of bagging a maiden F1 Title, only for Antonelli to emerge as a thorn in his side.
To make matters worse, luck hasn't been on Russell's side, which will be even more frustrating for him. He really needs to dig deep to get himself out of the current situation.
