Max Verstappen's miserable 2026 British Grand Prix ended with another retirement after a recurring rear wing failure left the four-time Formula 1 world champion beached and furious with Red Bull's reliability.

Although officially classified P20, Verstappen failed to reach the chequered flag for the third time this season following earlier retirements in China and Monaco. The Dutchman spun out of third place at Stowe after the rear wing on his RB22 failed to close fully, sending him into the gravel.
The incident was not an isolated failure. It emerged after the race that Verstappen's spin was caused by a reattachment issue with the rear wing, the same problem that also triggered his qualifying crash at Red Bull's home race.
The latest setback came after a tense build-up to Sunday's race. Verstappen had pushed Red Bull to change his engine after qualifying, even though it would have forced him to start from the pit lane. The team rejected that request, leaving him to line up on the grid with concerns over the car.
Those fears proved well founded. Running strongly in P3, Verstappen's race unravelled when the rear wing malfunctioned once again. Unable to regain control, he slid into the gravel at Stowe and was forced to retire.
The four-time Formula 1 champion was left visibly frustrated, saying he had grown tired of suffering repeated mechanical failures and warning that the issue was becoming a safety concern.

British Grand Prix Verstappen-Lambiase radio chat

Onboard footage and team radio broadcast on F1TV revealed the extent of Verstappen's struggles throughout the race, with race engineer Gianpiero Lambiase constantly working to guide his driver as problems developed before the rear-wing failure ultimately ended his afternoon.
Here is the transcript of Verstappen-Lambiase during the British Grand Prix, the Dutch ace getting on the radio from lap 6 onwards:
Lap 6
Verstappen: “Yeah, deployment feels very, very poor.”
Lambiase: “Hadjar does not have overtake this lap. You are quicker everywhere so let’s try to eke away now, mate. But understood.”
Lap 7
Verstappen: “You can’t tell me this deployment is normal.”
Lap 8
Verstappen: “Too much understeer also high speed.”
Lap 10
Lambiase: “OK, Max, you’re doing a great job. Gap behind 2.2. You still have an issue with straight line so you’re making it up in corners, which is pretty good at the moment. So keep your head down, very good.
Verstappen: “Yes, we should have just done what I said yesterday. I would have easily got to this place.”
Lambiase: “So the plan to give you a bit more flat at the stop… if in the meantime you can cope with less diff entry, that’s available. Could help.”
Verstappen: “I cannot, mate. The car’s so unbalanced!”
Lap 11
Verstappen: “Already for a few laps now, I haven’t said anything but the downshifts are so sh!t…”
Lambiase: “Max, recommend gear eight to Turn 9. You hold it for two seconds then downshift. And I will get back to you on the shifts.”
Lambiase: “Max, for shifts: display three, position seven. Let me know. Display three, position seven.”
Lap 22
Verstappen: “Mate, my engine again! No response! And now my whole battery is dead! F@ck sake! We lose so much time with all the time this bulls**t!”
Lap 24
Verstappen: “A lot of pushing on the downshifts.”
Lambiase: “OK, stand by. Gap behind to Russell 5.5. Hamilton is 1.5 behind him.”
Verstappen: “Still understeer high speed.”
Lambiase: “Display three, position six for downshifts. Display three, position six. Gap behind 3.5.”
Lap 27
Lambiase: “Twenty-six laps complete, Max. Twenty-six remain.”
Verstappen: “Terrible tyre for me.”
Lap 29
Verstappen: “Yeah, I have no grip on these tyres. It’s horrendous.”
Lambiase: “OK, Max, still 24 laps remaining. We’ll look at it. For reference, Hadjar lap time 34.2. Gap to him now 16.”
Verstappen: “Yes, I mean, I’m trying to fight the guys around me. That’s my reference.”
Lap 45
Verstappen: “Oh, come on! You’re only f@cking backmarkers! These clips are normal?”
Lambiase: “Yeah, that was the engine change, Max. We needed that just to the end.”
Lap 46
[With Verstappen in the sand]Lambiase: “Uh… are you OK?”
Verstappen: “I’m stuck. Mate, f@ck this car. F@ck! Unbelievable. F@ck this!”
