Carlos Sainz has been handed one of Formula 1's rarest penalties after the British Grand Prix, with the FIA demoting the Williams driver from 12th to 17th following a Safety Car infringement at Silverstone.

The Spaniard was originally classified 12th after Sunday's race, which ended behind the Safety Car following Max Verstappen's late crash at Stowe. However, a post-race investigation found Sainz had incorrectly unlapped himself during the final laps, resulting in the unusual "penalty lap" sanction.
The incident occurred on the penultimate lap after Race Control authorised selected lapped cars to overtake the Safety Car and rejoin at the back of the field. Sainz was among several drivers who completed the procedure, but the FIA later determined that he was not actually eligible to do so under Article B5.13.4c of the FIA Formula 1 Sporting Regulations.
The stewards accepted that Silverstone's unique pit lane layout played a significant role in the misunderstanding. In their verdict, they explained: "Although Car 55 was lapped at Safety Car Line 1 when entering the pit lane, due to the specific track and pit lane configuration at Silverstone it had temporarily unlapped itself by the time it crossed the Line at the end of the lap."
They added: "Given the exceptional track layout at this event, the Stewards understand how the sequence of events may have contributed to the team's confusion."
Despite acknowledging the unusual circumstances, the officials concluded that Williams should have recognised Sainz was not entitled to pass the Safety Car. The stewards noted that the team failed to identify that Sainz "was not a lapped car at the relevant reference point", while also pointing out that he "was not included in the Race Control message identifying the cars permitted to overtake the Safety Car."
With the infringement confirmed, the FIA imposed a one-lap penalty, one of the least frequently used sanctions available to race stewards.
The decision stated that the "penalty lap" "is one of the penalties available to [the Stewards] under the FIA International Sporting Code."
The revised classification drops Sainz five places from 12th to 17th, capping a frustrating afternoon for Williams after the team's hopes of salvaging a stronger result ended with an administrative error rather than on-track performance.
