Kimi Antonelli announced that the future is now as the
teenage sensation picked up his maiden
Grand Prix win in China at the tender age of just 19.
The Italian was the dominant force all
weekend in Shanghai, qualifying on pole before navigating the early challenge
from the Ferraris, then streaking clear with teammate George Russell.
The triumph underscored Mercedes' blistering start to the
2026 season, with the Silver Arrows winning both of the opening two races.
Russell won from teammate Antonelli in Australia to reinforce his status as the
world championship favourite.
Antonelli then returned the favour in China as he
headed the Mercedes one-two. But despite the Italian's victory and him being
just four behind his more experienced teammate in the championship standings,
it is indeed Russell that online betting sites still consider the title race
frontrunner.
The latest betting odds list Russell as the clear 1.57
favourite, with his teammate some way behind at 3.75. And while that may not
sound like a huge difference, the betting tool below shows just how wide the
disparity is between the two prices for a $100 stake.

aftermath of Antonelli's win? Does he
immediately
mount a championship challenge, perhaps becoming the youngest world champion ever? Or
will Russell begin to reinforce his dominance?
Well, let's take a look at what
happened after each of these young drivers' maiden grand prix triumphs. Max Verstappen's Barcelona Stunner
Heading into the 2016 Spanish Grand Prix, the big news
was surrounding 18-year-old Max Verstappen and his promotion to Red Bull's
primary team. The young Dutchman had been impressing with secondary outfit Toro
Rosso, but he was given the call to make the step up after some disappointing
displays from Daniil Kvyat. Expectations were high for the young prodigy, but
no one could have anticipated what was to come.
The Mercedes of Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton led off
the line, but the two silver arrows shockingly collided on the first lap,
leaving both out of the race. Verstappen was suddenly P2 behind teammate Daniel
Ricciardo. When the Australian opted for a three-stop strategy, as opposed to
his young understudy's two, it was the Dutchman who inherited the lead of the
race.
Throughout the final laps, Verstappen had a relentless
Sebastian Vettel all over his gearbox. Still, the teenager would not wilt under
the pressure, clinging on to a famous win to become the youngest race winner in
Formula One history. But
immediately following that
stunning win, the Mercedes pairing would reclaim its stranglehold.
Hamilton would
reel off six
wins in the next seven to take the fight to teammate Rosberg at the top of the
standings. Verstappen, meanwhile, wouldn’t win another race all season, but he
would pick up five podiums, including four second-place finishes. He would have
to wait over a year for his next victory, which would come in the 2017
Malaysian Grand Prix.
Sebastian Vettel's Monza Fairytale
Sebastian Vettel's upset win in the 2008 Italian Grand
Prix was the very definition of a Cinderella story. The German rookie was
quietly impressing in the midfield with Toro Rosso, picking up five points
finishes throughout the campaign. However, his exploits on a cold, wet weekend
in Monza took everybody by surprise.
In tricky conditions, both of the
championship protagonists struggled in qualifying. The best Felipe Massa could manage in his Ferrari was
P6, while Hamilton qualified way down in 15th after a disastrous display.
Vettel, meanwhile, would master the conditions to take a maiden pole position,
stunning the rest of the paddock. And on race day, he was about to prove that
it was no fluke.
Vettel led off the line almost unchallenged and would
proceed to streak clear of the rest of the grid, even
though on paper, his Toro Rosso was considered one of the slower cars on the
grid. He would go on to lead all but four laps, only briefly surrendering first
place due to his pitting four laps earlier than his nearest rivals. He would
win by over 12 seconds in one of the all-time great displays, delivering a true
star-is-born moment.
Immediately following his maiden triumph, Vettel would
continue to impress. He finished in the points in all but one of the remaining
four races, very nearly costing Lewis Hamilton the championship in the final
race in Brazil. With the Brit needing a fifth-place finish or better to claim
the title, Vettel took advantage of a rare Hamilton mistake in the race's dying
embers to snatch fifth place away. Hamilton, however, would
miraculously
get the job done, overtaking
Timo Glock on the final corner of the final lap of the final race of the season
to seal fifth place and the title.
