McLaren will arrive at the Austrian Grand Prix with renewed confidence after its encouraging return to the podium in Barcelona, while also introducing a series of updates aimed at strengthening its challenge at the front of the field.

The reigning Formula 1 Champions endured a mixed start to the European season, struggling in Monaco and Canada before rebounding at the Spanish Grand Prix. That performance has reinforced belief within the team that the MCL40 is moving in the right direction as development continues through the 2026 campaign.
Austria now presents another opportunity to build on that momentum at a circuit that has traditionally suited McLaren's package.
Neil Houldey, McLaren's Technical Director of Applied Engineering, believes the characteristics of both the car and its drivers could again make the team a contender at the Red Bull Ring.
"Austria has historically been a strong track for us, and while we take nothing for granted in such a tight field, we are optimistic that the car and driver characteristics will again suit the circuit, putting us in the fight at the front," Houldey said.

New upgrades for Spielberg

McLaren will bring a small but targeted update package to Spielberg, focusing on refinements around the rear corners of the car. The team will also evaluate an experimental rear wing throughout Friday practice as it continues its aggressive development programme.
While the changes are not as extensive as some of the upgrades introduced earlier in the season, McLaren believes every gain could prove decisive in an increasingly competitive midfield and front-running battle.
"We're always looking to make refinements that add performance and lap time to the car," Houldey explained. "For this event, we've focused on minor detail updates around the car's rear corners, as well as an experimental rear wing that will run throughout Friday's sessions.
"While the overall package is lighter than some of our recent updates, these developments are all part of our season-long development pathway, and we're continuing to look for every lap time opportunity wherever we can."
The short nature of the Red Bull Ring means even small improvements can have a significant impact. With lap times expected to be separated by only tenths of a second, marginal gains could prove crucial in both qualifying and race trim.

Wet weather could provide valuable lessons

Beyond outright performance, McLaren is also preparing for what could become one of the most important development weekends of the season.
Forecasts suggest changing weather conditions are possible in the Styrian mountains, potentially giving teams one of their first meaningful opportunities to run the new-generation 2026 cars in wet conditions.
The lack of wet-weather mileage under the current regulations means any rain could provide a valuable data-gathering exercise for teams still learning the behaviour of the new power units and aerodynamic packages.
Houldey sees that possibility as an opportunity rather than a complication.
"We are also preparing for the possibility of wet weather, which would be one of the first times running the car in those conditions this season," he said. "It presents a steep learning curve, especially with changes to energy management and power delivery in the wet.
"But it's an opportunity we will embrace to optimise every aspect of the car and maximise our performance, whatever the conditions," he concluded.
The team spent the week following Barcelona analysing the large volume of data gathered during the opening European double-header, helping engineers refine their understanding of the MCL40 and identify areas for further gains.
With the field remaining exceptionally close in the second year of the new regulations, McLaren knows continuous development will be essential if it is to remain in the fight against Ferrari, Mercedes and Red Bull.
Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri will lead the team's charge in Austria, while McLaren junior Matteo De Palo will also be in action at Spielberg as part of the Formula 3 support programme.
After showing encouraging pace in Barcelona, McLaren heads to Austria aiming to convert progress into another strong result. The updates may be modest, but at a circuit where margins are measured in thousandths of a second, even the smallest gains could make a significant difference.
