Haas driver Esteban Gutierrez has revealed that he was struck by a mysterious bug during the Canadian Grand Prix weekend and after a barrage of medical tests he is hoping he will be fit for the European Grand Prix.
Gutierrez told reporters in Baku, "When I arrived in Montreal I had very high fever. The whole weekend was not nice. I hope I'm fine now. I did a blood test and everything else and it turned out that all is well. So I think that it was just a bad phase for my body."
Gutierrez admits he struggled during the race at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, where he started 13th and finished 13th.
"The race was not really pleasant because I had big stomach pain in every braking zone,. Every time I had to brake, I felt it clearly. But anyway, I got through the 68 laps."
On the eve of the first free practice day in Baku, he said, "I will not say that I am at 100 percent fit. I need to see if I am in the car during practice. I feel much better, but of course, the recovery will take time."
"When there is something wrong with your body you think about it. That's one more thing that goes through your mind. Sometimes you just have no choice. I accept that I am a human being and I can sometimes get sick be. I just have try to get fit as quickly as possible. Which is what I'm trying at the moment," explained the Mexican.
Haas team does not have a nominated reserve driver. Should they need one it is expected they will tap into Ferrari's pool of drivers with Jean Eric Vergne the most likely candidate to step in to replace Gutierrez if the need arises.
