Russell
must test Antonelli’s resolve in Monaco
The first
signs of tetchiness between Russell and Antonelli surfaced in Canada, with the
pair clashing on the track during the sprint race on Saturday.
Antonelli
complained to the Mercedes team over the radio and his mood was not helped when
Russell pushed him off the track during Sunday’s race.
Team
principal Toto Wolff felt his drivers pushed the boundaries a little too much
in Canada and said they will talk again before the next race on June 7.
“It’s
important to analyse the race and discuss with the drivers whether they felt it
was a bit close and, if that is the case, how can we avoid these very, very
tough situations,”
Wolff said. “It’s always
easier at the end now to say, ‘well that was great for the team and great for
the sport and didn’t we all enjoy watching the battling’.
“And that is
true to a degree but there is another side from which we need to look at it,
that it was close a few times. We had the
margin today and then it’s easy to accept that they are fighting to a certain
degree, but obviously that’s not going to be always the case."
A star is born
Wolff continued: “So, as much
as we look very sportsmanlike today, allowing it, there could be a situation
where we would maybe turn it down a notch.”
While Wolff
will be eager to ensure that his drivers do not clash with each other, Russell
cannot afford to take a soft approach towards Antonelli.
The
19-year-old was clearly rattled during the sprint race, and Wolff did not take
too kindly to him communicating his dissatisfaction on the team radio.
Antonelli
has never previously been a championship contender, and Russell must do
whatever it takes to test his resolve in Monaco.
The British
driver has never finished higher than fifth place in the prestigious race, but he
must be at the top of the podium in his next outing.
Antonelli
has made a blistering start to the season, but Russell was giving him plenty to
think about in Canada before his car
suffered an engine failure. Wolff believes he will recover from
the setback.
“Things have
been going against him in the last few races,” Wolff added. “But if there’s one
guy that I would choose in this paddock in terms of resilience and
determination, that would be George.”
