Adrian Newey was appointed as Team Principal for the Aston Martin Formula 1 Team in November of 2025, a role that he undertakes in addition to being Technical Managing Partner.
Newey took over a position previously occupied by Andy Cowell, who in turn moved to a new role where he would coordinate between Aston Martin's partners Honda as well as Aramco and Valvoline on all matters related to the power unit, its fuel, and its lubricants.
Many have doubted Newey's suitability for such a public role, as he was always used to working in the background designing fast, race-winning F1 cars.
In a recent interview with the
Aston Martin F1 Team website, Newey was asked about his mindset with his new responsibilities.
He responded: "I became a Team Principal towards the end of last year. In many ways, to me, it's simply a title. The role within the team is to try to provide a direction, an ethos, a culture, that we all work by.
"I try to lead by example, where possible," the Briton went on. "But really, it’s about developing everybody.
"We're trying to develop at all levels so that we're working well together, which then means we'll get the best out of each other," Newey concluded.
Aston Martin revealed their 2026 F1 car, the AMR26, on the
penultimate day of the private testing week at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya.
The MAR26 turned heads once it hit the track, carrying many Newey trademark design cues, but it remains to be seen whether it will be fast, especially as a huge factor in its performance relies on the power unit Honda has delivered.
The AMR26 was also late, something Newey explained, claiming Aston Martin is yet to be operating smoothly since they moved to their new headquarters in Silverstone last year.
