Kimi Antonelli arrives at this weekend's Barcelona Catalunya Grand Prix carrying momentum, confidence and a commanding Formula 1 championship lead.
Mercedes driver Antonelli has won the last 5 Grands Prix and holds a 66-point advantage over Lewis Hamilton, with teammate George Russell a further 2 points adrift.
The 19-year-old Italian admitted his rookie campaign in 2025 was marked by periods of self doubt, but believes those difficult moments laid the foundations for his current success.
Reflecting on last season's struggles, Antonelli explained: "I would doubt a lot about myself, especially during that difficult period in Europe. This year has been a different story. You mature a lot after one year of F1, not only as a driver but also as a person.
"I think also last year, during the difficult period, I got to know myself better. Considering how bad it was in the moment, I'm very grateful that it happened because it made me grow a lot and taught me a lot about myself as well."
Since taking his maiden Formula 1 victory in China, Antonelli has been unstoppable. Wins in
Japan,
Miami,
Canada and
Monaco have transformed him from promising young talent into the benchmark of the 2026 season.
This year so far I'm not doubting myself
With comparisons already being made to some of the sport's greatest champions, Antonelli said he is embracing the pressure rather than feeling burdened by it: "This year so far I'm not doubting myself.
"There are questions that still need to be answered on my side. How much further can I go? How much more can I grow, and how big is the potential? Still many questions that need to be answered."
The Italian believes a more relaxed approach has also played a major role in unlocking his performance: "I feel very lucky to be in the position I am. It requires a lot of effort and commitment, and of course, the job is not done. We've got to keep pushing.
"One thing I said to myself at the start of the year is try and enjoy as much as possible all the weekends and all the times I go in the car. I feel like when I do so, I'm able to extract and maximise my performance.
"It's been a helpful factor. It also helps me drive relaxed and not as tense as I was last year. That's definitely playing a big factor," added the Italian teenager.
Mercedes unbeaten so far this year
Mercedes remain unbeaten in Grands Prix this season, although Lando Norris prevented a clean sweep by winning the Miami sprint.
Barcelona could prove one of Mercedes' most important weekends of the season. The team introduced an upgrade package in Canada, but unusual conditions in Montreal and Monaco have made it difficult to properly evaluate its impact.
Antonelli expects the
Circuit de Barcelona Catalunya to provide the clearest answer yet: "It's going to be an interesting weekend for us because we will see how the package we brought in Canada will work.
"We couldn't see the full potential or how much it's giving us because Canada has unique conditions being so cold, and Monaco is unique as well. Barcelona is a more standard track, and we'll see better how the package works and how much it's giving us in lap time," he explained.
Should Mercedes' latest developments perform as expected, Antonelli's rivals may face an even greater challenge stopping the youngster's remarkable march towards a first Formula 1 world title.
