George Russell declared that he feels like his "old self again" after securing pole position for the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix, capping a weekend in which the Mercedes driver has looked back to his best.
The Briton delivered when it mattered most on Saturday in
Qualifying, beating Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton and teammate Kimi Antonelli to claim the top spot on the grid after several races in which results had failed to reflect his pace.
His first reaction over team radio said everything about the confidence he has rediscovered. Asked by Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff, "George, how does it feel?", Russell replied: "Nice to feel the groove again!"
That sentiment carried into his post-qualifying media session, where Russell reflected on a turnaround after a frustrating run of weekends: "It's been a great weekend so far. I feel like my old-self again where every lap I'm doing the job, always fighting in those top positions.
"The last few races for numerous reasons haven't quite been on our side but I came in this weekend with a clean slate, felt good and it's great to be on pole."
Russell has been among the fastest drivers throughout the season, but circumstances and misfortune have often denied him the results to match his performances. In Barcelona, everything finally came together.
While Mercedes had expected its main opposition to come from McLaren, Russell admitted Ferrari's pace caught the team off guard: "It's going to be an interesting race tomorrow. Lewis did an amazing job to get up there. That was a real surprise. We thought the fight was with ourselves and McLaren but Lewis has been quick all this session."
Russell will have Antonelli in his mirrors on the grid
Hamilton's front-row start means Russell faces a direct challenge from a seven-time World Champion into Turn 1, while Antonelli starts immediately behind them on the second row.
Despite the threat from Ferrari and McLaren, Russell believes he is ready for the battle ahead: "I'm sure there will be a fight on our hands, so tomorrow won't be easy but I feel ready."
Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff was full of praise for Russell's performance: "George has been the quickest driver all weekend. Ahead of the session, if you had asked me for a favourite for pole it would have been him.
"He's been on it all weekend, has reset and refocused after his recent bad luck and put together an accomplished performance so far this weekend. He will need to carry that on into the race tomorrow if he wants to fight for victory but he's in a good place this weekend and reminding everyone just how good he is," added the Mercedes F1 boss.
After several weekends where fortune failed to match performance, Barcelona has provided Russell with the perfect opportunity to reset his campaign. Pole position puts him in control heading into Sunday's race, but with Hamilton alongside him and Antonelli directly behind, converting that pace into victory will be his toughest challenge yet.
