Kimi Antonelli's remarkable rise to the top of Formula 1 has earned praise from four-time world champion Alain Prost, who admits the Mercedes teenager has exceeded even the most optimistic expectations.

Writing in his regular column for the French newspaper L'Équipe, 71-year-old Prost reflected on Antonelli's extraordinary start to the 2026 season, with the 19-year-old leading the Drivers' Championship ahead of teammate George Russell after just six rounds.
The French legend highlighted the unprecedented nature of Antonelli's achievement, noting that Formula 1 has rarely seen such a young driver arrive and immediately challenge at the front against an established teammate.
"We knew he was fast; we hoped he was talented, but no one could have predicted he would be so solid," Prost wrote.
The former McLaren, Renault, Ferrari and Williams star admitted that few observers saw Antonelli's rise coming so quickly, particularly given the lack of experience the Italian brought into Formula 1.

Prost: Toughest challenges are still ahead

The four-time Formula 1 World Champion pointed to Antonelli's consistency and composure as the qualities that have impressed him most: "Since the beginning of this championship, we have never seen such a young rookie find himself leading the championship against a teammate who is not yet a world champion either. It is a first."
"I believe very few pundits saw Kimi Antonelli coming. We knew he was fast; we hoped he was talented, but nobody could have predicted he would be so solid," Prost observed.
Antonelli has won five races in succession, including a dominant victory in Monaco, and currently holds a healthy advantage over Russell in the standings. His performances have rapidly established him as the breakout star of the 2026 campaign.
Yet Prost believes the toughest challenges are still ahead. While impressed by Antonelli's early-season form, Prost warned that the true measure is still to come: "The question everyone is asking now is how long will he hold on and, above all, how will he react when things become more complicated, when mistakes arrive? Because they will arrive, that is certain."
The 51-time Grand Prix winner suggested that physical freshness may currently be helping Antonelli but warned of the mental demands of a title fight: "He will have to be strong, and that is where Antonelli will have to hold on, because while he has the physical freshness of youth, he risks suffering mentally."

Prost also stressed the importance of Mercedes managing the situation carefully as the battle with Russell intensifies over the coming months: "It is up to those around him and Mercedes to prepare him for this challenge against his teammate George Russell. For the moment, he is holding up well."
Prost's comments stand in stark contrast to several quotes that have circulated widely on social media in recent weeks, claiming the Frenchman questioned Antonelli's talent or suggested his success was solely due to Mercedes.
No credible source has been found for those remarks, and they do not appear in any verified interviews, columns, podcasts or published transcripts from Prost.
Instead, the only substantial public comments from the four-time champion regarding Antonelli's 2026 campaign have been overwhelmingly positive, combining admiration for the teenager's maturity with caution about the pressures that inevitably accompany a Formula 1 title challenge.
For now, one of the sport's greatest champions appears genuinely impressed by Formula 1's newest sensation. The question, as Prost himself noted, is whether Antonelli can maintain that level when the championship fight inevitably becomes tougher.
