After an instant classic that was the 2025 Formula 1 season, who would have guessed that this year's campaign would be even crazier?

Albeit for all the different reasons, the 2026 Formula 1 season is six races in, and we seem to have a very strong candidate for the championship trophy. And what a journey it has been so far for Kimi Antonelli. The Italian teenager seems to be the newest wonderkid, a motorsport prodigy from a country that knows a thing or two about speed and racing.
With several cancelled races along the way, it seems like this year’s title is his to lose, following 6 podiums and 5 wins to start it off. Not to get way ahead of ourselves, as there are 16 more races to go, but this has already been a legendary start, and the current F1 championship odds favor the young gun above everyone else. Still, several former champions are breathing down his neck.

Kimi Antonelli’s Career So Far

Andrea Kimi Antonelli was born on 25 August 2006 in Bologna. His parents named him after former Formula One World Champion Kimi Räikkönen, reflecting the family's deep passion for motorsport and perhaps tying his destiny to future greatness in the sport. Only time will tell, but he is getting there way ahead of schedule.
Antonelli grew up in an environment immersed in racing, with his father, Marco Antonelli, having competed in sports car and touring car racing while also operating racing teams.
From an early age, Antonelli was exposed to race circuits, pro grade supercar workshops, and driver development programs. His father's experience gave him access to technical knowledge and professional racing structures that helped accelerate his development.
Yet those close to the family have frequently emphasized that his rise was not simply the result of connections and the right circumstances. His extraordinary natural speed became apparent almost immediately once he began karting.

Karting Career and Mercedes Junior

Antonelli's competitive career began in karting, where he quickly established himself as one of the most talented young drivers of his generation. During the late 2010s and early 2020s, he accumulated victories across national and international competitions, earning a reputation for exceptional racecraft, tire management, and consistency.
His breakthrough came on the European stage. Antonelli won back to back FIA Karting European Championships in 2020 and 2021, an achievement that placed him among the most highly regarded junior prospects in world motorsport. During this period, he attracted the attention of numerous Formula One organizations, but his future became closely linked with Mercedes after joining the junior driver program at a very young age.
A major turning point arrived in 2019 when Antonelli joined the Mercedes Junior Team. The program, overseen by the legend himself, Toto Wolff, and his close knit Mercedes management, had previously guided drivers such as George Russell (Kimi’s current teammate) and Esteban Ocon toward Formula One careers.
Mercedes executives quickly recognized Antonelli as one of the most promising talents to enter the academy. Over the following years, the team invested heavily in his development through simulator work, testing opportunities, and close technical support. By the time he reached single-seater racing, many within Formula 1 already viewed him as a potential future Mercedes factory driver.

Formula 4 Dominance

Antonelli graduated to Formula 4 racing in 202 where his first full season demonstrated remarkable dominance. Racing for Prema Racing, he won both the Italian Formula 4 Championship and the ADAC Formula 4 Championship during that 2022 campaign. A double in his first competitive season? Nothing was the same since.
Winning one major Formula 4 title is generally enough to establish a young driver's credentials. Winning two in the same season immediately elevated Antonelli into the highest tier of international prospects.
His speed, adaptability, and maturity were consistently praised by engineers and team managers. He frequently outperformed older and more experienced competitors while displaying a polished driving style uncommon for a teenager.

Formula Regional Success

Rather than spending multiple seasons climbing the traditional junior ladder, Antonelli continued progressing at an aggressive pace. In 2023, he competed in both the Formula Regional Middle East Championship and the Formula Regional European Championship. He won the Formula Regional Middle East title with a series of victories and podiums before carrying that momentum into Europe.
There, he captured the Formula Regional European Championship, one of the strongest junior categories outside Formula 3 and Formula 2.
His championship campaign included five victories and numerous podium finishes, confirming his status as the leading junior driver in world motorsport. By the end of 2023, many observers believed Antonelli was already ready for Formula 2, despite being younger than most of his rivals.

The Formula 2 Challenge

In one of the boldest career decisions of the modern junior era, Antonelli skipped Formula 3 entirely and moved directly into the FIA Formula 2 Championship. Such a jump is exceptionally rare because Formula 2 represents the final step before Formula 1 and typically features older, highly experienced drivers.
The move initially brought challenges. Antonelli needed time to adapt to more powerful machinery and a higher level of competition. However, his raw pace soon became evident.
He scored race victories and podium finishes while consistently improving his qualifying performances and race management. By the end of the campaign, he had demonstrated enough potential to convince Mercedes that he was ready for the real deal.

Promotion to Formula 1 and Rookie Season

The biggest opportunity of Antonelli's career emerged when seven time World Champion Lewis Hamilton announced his departure from Mercedes.
The team faced a historic decision regarding Hamilton's replacement. Instead of signing a more experienced driver, Mercedes chose Antonelli, believing his ceiling was exceptionally high and that his long term value outweighed the risks associated with promoting a teenager.
He made his Formula 1 debut in 2025 alongside George Russell. At only 18 years old, he became one of the youngest drivers in Formula One history.
Antonelli's rookie campaign exceeded all expectations. While many young drivers require several seasons to adjust, he felt right at home. His debut season featured points finishes, strong qualifying performances, and several headline worthy moments. He became the youngest driver to achieve a fastest lap, while also securing podium finishes and regularly competing near the front.
Kimi finished 7th in the World Championship standings (150 points, 3 podiums) and gained valuable experience against elite opposition. Of course, Antonelli made mistakes, had difficult weekends, and experienced periods of inconsistency, but his ability to learn quickly impressed Mercedes. Reflecting on his rookie year, he stated he had grown significantly as a driver and a person.

The 2026 Breakthrough

The opening months of 2026 proved he needed no more preparation. After coming second at the opening GP in Australia, where his teammate Russell came 1st, he secured his first F1 victory at the subsequent race.
At the Chinese Grand Prix, he simultaneously became the youngest pole sitter in Formula One history. The win marked a historic moment for both Antonelli and Mercedes, confirming he possessed not only raw speed but also the ability to deliver under intense pressure. Five more victories followed as he established himself as the benchmark driver of the season.
As of June 2026, and the Monaco Grand Prix, he has become the dominant figure of the season. Driving for Mercedes, he has won five of the first six Grands Prix and leads the championship by a substantial margin over none other than Hamilton.
He is sitting comfortably at 156 points right now, already more than his rookie year total. Hamilton has 90 (3 podiums) in 2nd, while Russell is third with 88 (1 win, 2 podiums). Official Formula 1 statistics show five victories, six podiums, and four pole positions from the opening six races. Incredible.
His run of victories culminated in a landmark triumph at the Monaco Grand Prix. Starting from pole position, Antonelli controlled a chaotic race that included safety cars, a red flag, and multiple restarts. He became the youngest winner in Monaco's history and secured his fifth consecutive victory.
Lewis Hamilton, Max Verstappen, and George Russell have struggled to match his consistency, while F1 sportsbooks and media portray Antonelli as the favorite for the World Drivers' Championship, with Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff frequently praising both his pace and maturity.
