Hulkenberg-Barcelona-2-2026

Nico Hulkenberg was on his way to scoring his first points in the 2026 Formula 1 season when his Audi broke down during the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix last weekend.

It was also the first time in 2026 that Hulkenberg made Q3 in Qualifying, but points in Barcelona were not meant to be.
And while it was believed that a reliability issue was the cause of the #27 Audi stopping on the track, the actual reason was revealed afterward, and it was truly bizarre.
While Hulkenberg was fighting for track position with Racing Bulls' Liam Lawson on Lap 28 of the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix, the Kiwi went off at Turn 12 and into the gravel trap, throwing some gravel in the direction of the German.
Some of the gravel found its way to the R26's safety fire switch and triggered a shutdown. Hulkenberg then coasted to the Audi garage and retired.
Speaking after the race, he said: “It was a very unusual and unfortunate retirement.
"Liam [Lawson] ran slightly wide ahead of me and put a wheel into the gravel at Turn 12, which kicked up a lot of stones.
“Some of them hit our car and appear to have triggered the emergency safety switch, causing a complete shutdown of the system. Everything switched off instantly, and that was the end of our race.
"It's obviously very frustrating because we were in a good position to fight for points," Hulkenberg lamented.
Audi Racing Director Allan McNish commented on the matter; he added: “It was a very frustrating end to what had been a very good weekend for us as a team.
"Nico’s car shut down after Lawson ran wide and kicked up gravel, which struck the safety fire switch. That triggered an automatic safety function designed to shut the car down in an emergency situation.
"Nico was able to coast back to the pits, but unfortunately that was the end of his race," McNish concluded. (Reporting by Agnes Carlier)
