The Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA) and Formula E have revealed the all-new GEN4 car in its first on-track appearance at Circuit Paul Ricard, marking a significant step forward for electric motorsport ahead of the 2026/27 season.

The next-generation machine, which will be raced in the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship, represents a major leap in performance and technology.
Capable of exceeding 335kph, accelerating from 0–100kph in 1.8 seconds and 0–200kph in 4.4 seconds, the GEN4 is around 1.5 seconds faster to 200kph than its predecessor and delivers 50% more power in race trim.
In ATTACK MODE, the GEN4 produces up to 600kW, a 71% increase over the GEN3 Evo baseline, while introducing permanent all-wheel drive, a first for a Formula E single-seater.
The car also features dual aerodynamic configurations, optimised separately for qualifying performance and race energy management, reflecting the increasing complexity of electric race strategy.
Track running at Paul Ricard highlighted the scale of the step forward, with the GEN4 prototype lapping at least five seconds faster than the GEN3 Evo and up to 10 seconds quicker than the original GEN3 in qualifying trim.

Manufacturers to drive further gains

Mohammed Ben Sulayem described the project as a defining moment: “The new GEN4 Formula E car marks a significant step forward for electric racing, setting a new global benchmark for performance, innovation, and sustainability. It is not simply just a fast car, it is a statement of intent about the future of this technology.”
Formula E CEO Jeff Dodds added: “GEN4 isn’t just a car, it's a bold declaration of our ambition. Seeing what it can do on track for the first time is a real milestone for Formula E. The step up in performance is immediately clear, from the speed and power to the way it delivers on track.”
Manufacturers including Porsche, Jaguar, Nissan, Stellantis, Mahindra and Lola Cars will now take over development, refining the package ahead of its competitive debut later this year.
Beyond outright pace, the GEN4 has been engineered with sustainability and safety at its core, featuring at least 20% recycled materials, tyres made from 65% natural and recycled components, and a battery free from rare earth minerals.
Enhanced crash structures, a wider cockpit and power-assisted steering have also been introduced to improve driver protection and accessibility.
With performance levels rising sharply and development now in the hands of leading manufacturers, the GEN4 era signals a clear shift in Formula E’s trajectory as it pushes towards faster, more advanced and road-relevant electric racing.
