McLaren Racing will interrupt its intensive Hypercar testing programme to give the MCL-HY its first public appearance at Goodwood Festival of Speed.
The new-for-2027
FIA World Endurance Championship challenger will complete demonstration runs on Friday and Saturday. It will then return immediately to testing on Sunday.
The MCL-HY will appear in its Bruce McLaren tribute test livery during the Goodwood Festival of Speed. Its first public dynamic run is scheduled for 11:00 on Friday.
A second Friday run will follow at 15:40. McLaren has also confirmed Saturday appearances at 12:40 and 17:05.
The decision comes just 10 weeks into the car’s full on-track development programme. McLaren initially considered a Goodwood appearance unlikely because testing remained the clear priority.
However, the team’s early progress encouraged management to make a late change. The car was diverted to Goodwood for two days before returning to development work.
McLaren makes late call after MCL-HY hits testing targets
McLaren revealed the MCL-HY digitally on May 4, 2026. The development car then completed its rollout before beginning full circuit testing.
It represents McLaren Racing’s first outright Le Mans challenger since the McLaren F1 GTR. That car famously won the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1995.
McLaren Hypercar Team Principal James Barclay explained that Goodwood had always been considered. However, the early stage of the programme made participation uncertain.
Barclay said: “Goodwood Festival of Speed is the greatest car show on Earth, so it made sense for us to have this on our radar. But the truth is, it's extremely early in our test programme so it was very lightly pencilled in.
“However, our team has done an incredible job, hitting every target on- and off-track so we made the last-minute call to divert the MCL-HY to the event for two of the four days and share it with the passionate motorsport fans that attend.”
The appearance gives British fans their first opportunity to see McLaren’s new Hypercar running in public. Goodwood is also located close to the company’s base in Woking.
That proximity helped make the diversion possible without causing a lengthy interruption to the testing schedule. McLaren will resume preparations as soon as the car leaves the event.
McLaren prepares for WEC and Le Mans return
The MCL-HY is powered by a twin-turbocharged V6 engine. It is being developed for McLaren’s return to top-level endurance racing in 2027.
McLaren will enter the FIA World Endurance Championship and challenge for overall victory at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. It will face several of the world’s leading manufacturers in the Hypercar category.
The programme carries significant historical importance for the British manufacturer. McLaren has not contested Le Mans overall honours since the F1 GTR era.
Barclay believes the growing popularity of endurance racing in Britain made Goodwood the ideal platform for the car’s public debut.
He added: “The appetite for sports car racing in the UK is huge and we're delighted that Goodwood gives us the opportunity to celebrate this.
“UK-based fans who are hungry for more will also now have the chance to see the Hypercar class in action at Silverstone, as the WEC returns to the Home of British Motorsport next year.
“Thank you to everyone who has pushed to make it possible and to The Duke who was excited for us to bring it to Goodwood – we cannot wait to show this exciting new Le Mans challenger to the British public in person.”
The Goodwood appearance remains a brief interruption rather than a formal launch event. McLaren’s primary objective is still preparing the MCL-HY for competition.
Once Saturday’s final demonstration run is completed, attention will return to testing. Every mile will count before McLaren faces its first WEC season and Le Mans campaign in 2027.
