McLaren has introduced the 788HS, the final evolution of its series supercar line that began with the 720S and continued through the 765LT and 750S, with the new model using a Formula 1-inspired aerodynamic package and a 788PS twin-turbocharged V8.
The 788HS has a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 engine producing 788PS, combined with a dry weight of 1,265kg. McLaren said the car delivers a power-to-weight ratio of 623PS per tonne, the highest figure achieved by any model in the 720S, 750S and 765LT series.
Henrik Wilhelmsmeyer, Chief Commercial Officer at McLaren Automotive, said: “The new McLaren 788HS has been designed and engineered with a singular focus; to deliver a visceral experience and captivating drive through its precise balance of performance, sound, dynamism and individuality.
“It represents the ultimate expression of our supercar series that began with the 720S and becomes only the third McLaren to wear our HS designation – a fitting finale for a much loved and critically acclaimed car.”
The HS, or High Sport, designation has previously appeared only on two McLaren models, the MP4-12C HS and the MSO HS. McLaren said the 788HS uses the badge to mark the conclusion of the current supercar lineage while offering clients extensive personalisation through McLaren Special Operations.
The car’s exterior package includes a new S-Duct bonnet, raised active rear spoiler, bespoke front splitter and an intricate rear diffuser inspired by Formula 1. McLaren said the package increases downforce by 10% compared with the 765LT while retaining the balance and dynamics of the platform.
Top speed of 330km/h
The 788HS also features sculpted bodywork elements, a louvred under-wing panel to support cooling and aerodynamic efficiency, and gloss black exterior accents. Coupe versions can be specified with a roof scoop, while clients may also choose full Visual Carbon Fibre bodywork across all exterior panels.
Inside, the 788HS has a driver-focused cabin layout, including a lightweight carbon fibre centre console. The cabin also carries bespoke HS branding, a unique perforation pattern for the upholstery and a dedication plaque marking the model.
The M840T engine revs to 8,500rpm and produces peak power at 7,500rpm, with 800Nm of torque. McLaren said the 788HS accelerates from 0-100km/h in 2.8 seconds and from 0-200km/h in 7.0 seconds, with a top speed of 330km/h.
The car uses Proactive Chassis Control III linked-hydraulic suspension with bespoke tuning, as well as a front ride height that is 5mm lower than the 750S. McLaren said the calibration is intended to increase dynamic response and driver engagement.
Braking is handled by carbon ceramic discs derived from the McLaren Senna, with black six-piston forged aluminium monoblock front calipers and integrated cooling. The 788HS also introduces the first centre-lock wheel mechanism fitted to this supercar series, paired with a new Super Lightweight Forged Alloy wheel.
A quad-exit titanium exhaust system has been fitted to give the V8 a more intense sound across the rev range. McLaren said induction and exhaust sound symposer technologies have also been used to increase the connection between the driver and the twin-turbocharged engine.
