Esteban Ocon arrived from his summer break at Spa-Francorchamps knowing that his future with Force India, and Formula 1 for that matter, is shaky which is a concern he admitted but is confident his minders at Mercedes have his future covered
It was a double-whammy holiday for Ocon as a drive with Renault next year went out the window when the French outfit swooped and surprised everyone with a
two-year deal to lure Daniel Ricciardo away from Red Bull.
Then, Force India was
saved by a Lawrence Stroll led consortium which means that next year the billionaire's son Lance will be in the team, meaning that either Sergio Veteran or Ocon will leave, at least one of them are expected to stay on.
In the wake of these developments, the 21-year-old Frenchman admitted that his future is now uncertain and explained to reporters ahead of the Belgian Grand Prix weekend, "For sure, it is not easy, but that is what you need to do as a racing driver. You are here for the sport and you are here for performing, and not listening to all this."
Ocon, from a family of modest means, has been supported by Mercedes from his junior days into the Formula 1 seat he now occupies.
He believes his future is covered, "I am not worried, obviously Mercedes and my management in Mercedes have been taking the right choices in the past years, and I am sure they will be able to do the same again."
Asked about reports linking him to McLaren and perhaps even Williams, Ocon insisted, "I don't know if I will move to McLaren, I don't know if I will be moving from here. At the moment, these are just rumours and we will see."
"What is important is always to perform on track and as I always say, if you perform on track then an F1 team can't get rid of you if you perform. That is my target and I want to do the same as I have done in the first half of the season, trying to do the best I can. If I do that, I will have a seat next year."
Ocon also revealed that he bore no grudge against Renault or Ricciardo, "It was not a shock obviously. We had possibilities there but in the end, it has passed and we have to move forward."
"I wish Daniel and Renault all the best. Daniel is a good guy and I like him, so I wish them the best," added Ocon who lies 12th in the championship a point behind Perez in the standings ahead of this weekend's Round 13 in Belgium.
Big Question: Should Esteban be worried?
