Williams Formula 1 team boss James Vowles commented on the tweaks to the sport's regulations announced on Monday, labeling them as sensible.

In the aftermath of the 2026 Japanese Grand Prix, Formula One Management (FOM), the governing FIA, teams, drivers, and stakeholders in general have been in discussions to find a way to change the rules following the yo-yo racing we have seen in the first three races, not to mention the safety aspect caused by unpredictable starts and high differential in closing speeds between two racing cars.
While Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali remained defiant, claiming all was good, it was clear that change was needed following criticism from the fans on the quality of racing, with qualifying now becoming an energy management exercise instead of being flat-out driving challenging both driver and machine.
After a series of meetings in April, making use of the unexpected break caused by the war in the Middle East, which meant F1 races in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia couldn't take place, the FIA announced changes on Monday.
It remains to be seen whether these changes will make any difference given how fundamentally wrong the 2026 rules have turned out to be.
But Vowles, who has enough problems on his plate trying to recover from a disastrous start for Williams, seems to be optimistic about the changes.
The Briton said on social media: "These are sensible changes, and the teams, FIA, and Formula 1 have done good work over the past few weeks to agree them.
"F1 has seen some great racing so far this year, but it is right that we always look at ways to keep improving. We look forward to seeing them in action from Miami onwards," he added.
The World Motor Sport Council will now ratify the changes through an e-vote, with the upcoming Miami Grand Prix being the first chance to see how they pan out.
