Formula 1 chief Bernie Ecclestone has revealed the gang who kidnapped his mother-in-law threatened to cut her head off, but at the same time added that he would not have paid the ransom demanded by the gang.
Ecclestone’s mother-in-law, Aparecida Schunck, 67, was kidnapped in Brazil for a ransom of €32 million.
The Formula 1 supremo and his wife Fabiana Flosi, grew increasingly concerned after she was abducted from her home in Sao Paulo more than a week ago. The gang behind her kidnapping threatened to decapitate Schunck.
Brazilian police revealed that they rescued Schunck on the day of the German Grand Prix from two men on the outskirts of Sao Paulo, where she had been held captive for nine days.
Her captors even sent videos of women being beheaded to bribe the couple into paying up, and Ecclestone admitted, "That was the worst moment."
He told The Sunday Times that the incident had shaken his family, "I never anticipated it could happen."
Ecclestone, whose net worth is estimated by Forbes to be $3.1 billion, was asked by the Sunday Times about the ransom demanded by the gang, to which he declared, "I never intended to pay them."
And joked, "All my friends know that I wouldn't pay a penny for a mother-in-law."
