Williams boss Jost Capito believes that George Russell thrives under pressure in a way that some drivers cannot.
The young Brit scored his first points for the team at the Hungarian Grand Prix,
a milestone that caused him to get quite emotional after the race.
Where Russell ends up racing next season remains to be seen, with Mercedes boss Toto Wolff set to make a decision on who will partner Lewis Hamilton going forward ahead of the Belgian Grand Prix later this month.
While the potential loss of Russell would prove a blow for Williams, the team clearly believe in his potential to deliver at the highest level.
"I have to say, I had hardly seen him that motivated as I saw him Sunday before the race having qualified 18th,” Capito told the official
Formula 1 website.
“Instead, he said ‘today is the day, I will see what I can do. I will fight'.
“He was so focused and determined, even more than when he qualified eighth at Silverstone. That was really great to see.
“If he gets a knock he comes back better. He grows under pressure. The bigger the pressure is, the better he becomes. Many crack under pressure, but George is completely different. The more pressure the better he will perform.
“We saw that when he was in the Mercedes last year. It was the biggest pressure you could put on any driver and he performed brilliantly – and this is his attitude," Capito concluded.
