Formula 1 Director of Motorsports Ross Brawn has provided insight into the future of the top flight from 2021 and beyond, tackling a variety of subjects including the goal to expand from the current 21-race season calendar into 24-races.
On Tuesday F1 and the FIA presented the next episode of the vision which will have to be drafted into rules before being cemented in stone for the next era of the sport.
It appears that an oath of secrecy was agreed upon after the meeting because very little information has surfaced from the attendees since they gathered suggesting there has been progress.
Speaking to Martin Brundle during a Sky F1 interview, Brawn revealed of the 2021 meeting, "It was a step along the way. A year ago we spoke about these topics and I think we had a vision of where we wanted to be and Tuesday was a really good step in the right direction to get us to where we want to be."
"We have to have a competitive field. We don't want an artificial environment where we force the order, we want the best to still succeed. But we just don't want them to be dominant - we want to close the field up and we want as fair a contest as we can."
The huge expense of turning a racing organisation into a Formula 1 team has been one of the major obstacles that keeps teams from attempting a foray into the top flight.
However, not long ago Gene Haas bucked the trend by adapting his vast racing empire to include a Formula 1 team with a substantial dollop of help from Ferrari. The partnership, which includes a deal to use Ferrari power units, has had a fair share of criticism as independent teams fear the B-team model will become increasingly prevalent.
Brawn explained, "The Haas model is interesting and it has been very successful. It's something we have to maintain for the future, for a small team to come in and be pretty respectable. There's some trimming we need to do about what they've been able to do. All credit to them, they took a model that was there which nobody had exploited as much as they did, and it's a great story."
"The fans like seeing Haas up there beating up some of the big teams. We are finding the best solution where we have the right balance of manufacturers, the teams like Renault, McLaren and Williams that they can hold their place, but give that opportunity for Haas.
Brawn, a former team principal, knows the duress and stress put on teams with limited funding, yet it appears the sport is intent on expanding the calendar to 24 races in the future.
"We've got some exciting races coming up," ventured Brawn. "Vietnam I'm really excited about because we've been much more involved with the circuit design there. Incredibly enthusiastic, new culture and new place for people to visit. There are some other races on the horizon.
"We want to have two or three more races in a season and we believe we can do that without over-stressing the teams, by refining their weekends," added Brawn.
Big Question: Are 24 races per season a good thing for F1?
