Ross Brawn has some clear ideas about what Formula 1 is and should continue to be, one of these is that the drivers must remain the heroes, the ones that make a difference at the wheel of the fastest and most expensive race cars ever built.
No one has been F1 World Champion with a bad car, but there are those that have won titles in cars that were not necessarily the best in a given season. In the modern hybrid turbo era if a driver is not in a Mercedes or Ferrari or, to a lesser extent, Red Bull he will not be winning grand prix races.
The right package at the right time ensures success, but the emphasis on having the right power unit needs to be addressed, with more importance attached to the role of the driver as a priority.
Brawn explained, "We do not want the engine to be the major differentiator. The first differentiator should be the driver, the second should be the car and the third should be the engine."
"We want to try and create a set of technical regulations on the engine which are appealing to new manufacturers coming in, as well as consolidate our existing engine suppliers."
"I think we just need to think of our timing on that, whether 2021 is the right time to do it, or whether it's better to keep that powder dry until we can be certain that a major regulation change will bring fresh blood into the sport," added Brawn.
Mercedes powered drivers Lewis Hamilton, Nico Rosberg and Valtteri Bottas have won 70 times since the start of 2014, Ferrari driver Sebastian Vettel has won 12 races while Red Bull duo Daniel Ricciardo and Max Verstappen have 10 victories in the past five years.
The last time a team outside of the Big Three won in Formula 1 was back when Kimi Raikkonen won the 2013 Australian Grand Prix driving for Lotus-Renault.
