Oscar Piastri played down conspiracy theories, swallowed his disappointment and played the part of loyal McLaren team man during the Italian Grand Prix, at Monza on Sunday.
While in P2 after a slick pitstop by his crew, Piastri obeyed controversial McLaren team orders that allowed Lando Norris to reclaim second place and trim his deficit in the
2025 Formula 1 world championship fight. The title odds have narrowed according to

On a day when Max Verstappen dominated the fastest
Formula 1 race of all time with a 19.2-second win for Red Bull, attention turned to the team-order drama between the two McLaren title rivals. Piastri, who had been set to extend his points lead, was instructed to let Norris past in the final laps after the Briton lost time in the pits through no fault of his own.
Norris had been running comfortably in P2 before a wheelgun error cost him almost six seconds during his stop. That delay dropped him behind Piastri with seven laps to go. On lap 49 of 53, McLaren ordered the Australian to move aside, which he did reluctantly.
Over the radio, Piastri’s frustration was clear: “We said that a slow pit-stop was part of racing, so I don’t really get what changed here, but I will do it.” By conceding, he surrendered three valuable points, finishing third behind Norris and Verstappen. The gap in the standings is now 31 points instead of 37.
After the race, Piastri softened his stance, explaining: “I think today was a fair request. Lando qualified ahead, was ahead the whole race, and lost the spot through no fault of his own.
"So, I said what I had to say on the radio and once I got the second request, I’m not going against the team. There’s a lot of people to protect and a culture to protect outside of just Lando and I. Ultimately that’s a very important thing going forward," added Piastri.
Norris benefits, Verstappen laughs
For Norris, the situation was straightforward. He admitted he would not have expected the same treatment if the mistake had been his own. “If I came flat-out into my box and hit all my mechanics out of the way, I also don’t expect to get the position back, but today was out of my control,” he said.
Verstappen, watching the McLaren reshuffle from the front, was amused. When informed of the switch he chuckled over the radio: “Just because of a slow pit-stop?”
The Dutchman had little else to worry about on Sunday. After briefly conceding the lead to Norris on the second lap, Verstappen powered back past on lap four and disappeared into the distance. His victory, the 66th of his career and first since May, came at a record average speed of 250.706 kph around Monza’s Temple of Speed.
Behind the podium battle, Charles Leclerc kept Ferrari in the fight early against Piastri but ultimately settled for fourth. George Russell took fifth for Mercedes, with teammate Lewis Hamilton climbing from 10th on the grid, following a penalty, to finish sixth.
Piastri, though, left Monza as the story of the afternoon. Outwardly honourable but privately bruised, the Australian accepted a bitter team order that tightened the title race heading into the next round.
