Hamilton in hot water over princess dress

While most of us tucked into our Christmas festivities, Formula 1 World Champion Lewis Hamilton has landed himself in hot water for making politically incorrect comments in a family video in which he appears to berate his nephew dressed up as a princess.

In an Instagram video, which has since been deleted, Hamilton says to the lad that “boys don’t wear princess dresses.”

During a slow news period for everyone, this was fodder for the yellow press who seized upon it with relish. The four times Formula 1 World Champion has since faced heavy criticism on social media for the clip, which appears to have been filmed on Christmas Day.

The offensive video was posted on his Instagram, which has 5.7-million followers and shows Hamilton speaking to the camera before turning it on his young relative.

Hamilton said in the video: “I’m so sad right now. Look at my nephew.”

The camera then shows the boy wearing a pink and purple princess outfit while holding a toy magic wand.

Hamilton asks: “Why are you wearing a princess dress? Is this what you got for Christmas?”

The young boy starts laughing as Hamilton continued: “Why did you ask for a princess dress for Christmas? Boys don’t wear princess dresses.”

Hamilton has since explained and apologised on Twitter: “Yesterday [Christmas Day] I was playing around with my nephew and realised that my words were inappropriate so I removed the post. I meant no harm and did not mean to offend anyone at all. I love that my nephew feels free to express himself as we all should.”

“My deepest apologies for my behaviour as I realise it is really not acceptable for anyone, no matter where you are from, to marginalise or stereotype anyone.”

“I have always been in support of anyone living their life exactly how they wish and I hope I can be forgiven for this lapse in judgement.”

Liam Hackett of the anti-bullying charity Ditch the Label tweeted: “Disappointing to see somebody with such a huge platform use it to publicly shame and attempt to undermine a small child.”

BBC reports that, Imraan Sathar of discrimination support charity Stay Brave UK, called for Hamilton to be stripped of his MBE.
