The 2026 FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) fires into life this weekend with the 6 Hours of Imola, as a 14-manufacturer field descends on Italy for the season opener and Ferrari targets a statement victory on home soil.

Set at the historic Autodromo Internazionale Enzo e Dino Ferrari, the 4.909km anti-clockwise track provides a demanding backdrop. High speeds of up to 315km/h, 42 gear changes per lap and long full-throttle sections combine with a bumpy surface and tight layout that punishes mistakes and complicates traffic management across both Hypercar and LMGT3 classes.
Due to the posteponement of the original opening round slated for Qatar in late March, by war in the region, this year’s curtain-raiser marks the WEC championship’s return to a European season opener for the first time since 2021, with an entry list boasting 99 drivers including 15 rookies and 7 Italian competitors. Among the newcomers are former Formula 1 driver Logan Sargeant and FIA Formula 3 champion Victor Martins.
Ferrari arrives as defending champion and clear focal point of the weekend, buoyed by strong recent form at Imola. Two years ago, the marque locked out the top 3 in qualifying, and in 2025 the #51 crew converted pole into victory.
Former Formula 1 driver Antonio Giovinazzi set the tone in Hyperpole with a dominant lap, before leading the race charge alongside James Calado and Alessandro Pier Guidi. The trio controlled more than 80 percent of the race distance on their way to Ferrari’s 60th win in the series.

Ferrari defending WEC Champions

Now the Italian manufacturer is chasing its first successful title defence since 2022, with Imola offering the ideal launchpad given the concentration of Ferrari entries and the backing of the tifosi.
Toyota, however, remains the benchmark in overall WEC terms. The Japanese manufacturer heads into its 100th race in the championship targeting a 50th victory, armed with an updated GR010 Hybrid following a difficult 2025 campaign.
Brendon Hartley and Kamui Kobayashi continue as ever-present figures in the Hypercar era, underlining Toyota’s continuity and experience advantage.
Behind Ferrari and Toyota, the Hypercar battle looks wide open. BMW returns with significant aerodynamic upgrades to its M Hybrid V8, aiming to convert previous podium pace into a first victory.
Alpine, competitive at Imola last year, begins its campaign with expectations of another strong showing, while Peugeot debuts a revised 9X8 package featuring a bold new look.
Cadillac faces an early setback with Alex Lynn sidelined for the opening rounds due to a neck procedure. Despite that, the V Series.R is expected to remain competitive after steady progress through 2025.
Aston Martin continues development of the Valkyrie Hypercar, while Genesis prepares for its debut season following an extensive testing programme as Hyundai’s luxury arm enters top-level endurance racing.

LMGT3 set for tight duel

The LMGT3 category promises another close fight, with BMW and Porsche renewing their rivalry at a circuit that has already delivered one of the closest finishes in class history.
In 2025, Porsche edged BMW by just 0.316 seconds at the line, underlining the fine margins expected again this weekend.
BMW’s Team WRT entry returns with strong credentials, while Porsche aims to defend its crown. Lexus, which secured its breakthrough podium at Imola last year, enters the new season as a genuine contender following further progress.
Ferrari’s 296 LMGT3 also features prominently, with the AF Corse squad building on consecutive seasons of improvement as it targets a sustained title challenge.
The season launches with packed schedule, Track action begins with the Prologue test before practice on Friday, with qualifying and Hyperpole scheduled for Saturday afternoon.
The six-hour race starts at 13:00 CEST on Sunday, launching what promises to be one of the most competitive WEC seasons in recent years.
With Ferrari chasing glory at home, Toyota seeking redemption, and multiple manufacturers poised to challenge, Imola is set to deliver a high-stakes opening chapter to the 2026 endurance racing campaign.

Imola Prologue signals early WEC Hypercar benchmark

Ferrari laid down an early marker ahead of the 2026 FIA World Endurance Championship opener at Imola, topping both Prologue sessions as rivals closed in during a full day of running at the Autodromo Internazionale Enzo e Dino Ferrari.
The defending champions controlled proceedings from the outset, with Antonio Giovinazzi leading in the morning before Antonio Fuoco raised the benchmark in the afternoon to secure overall honours across the day.
In damp morning conditions, Giovinazzi edged Robert Kubica by 0.097 seconds to put Ferrari on top, with Nicklas Nielsen completing a clean sweep of the top three for the 499P Hypercars.
Norman Nato was best of the rest in fourth for Cadillac Hertz Team JOTA, while René Rast placed BMW fifth.
Genesis logged over 150 laps with its GMR 001 prototypes on debut, finishing just over 2 seconds off the pace, while a red flag interrupted running after Marco Sørensen crashed the Aston Martin Valkyrie. The #15 BMW also lost track time due to an engine change.
Ferrari strengthened its grip in the afternoon as Fuoco went 0.4 seconds quicker than the morning benchmark, finishing 0.126 seconds ahead of Kubica, with Giovinazzi close behind in third to maintain a top three lockout.
The gap, however, shrank significantly. BMW’s Robin Frijns moved up to fourth and cut the deficit to 0.532 seconds, while Alpine’s pair of A424s followed closely in fifth and sixth.
Genesis added a further 204 laps to its tally, continuing its build-up to its competitive debut, while Aston Martin’s #009 Valkyrie did not return following its earlier crash.

LMGT3: Margins razor-thin across the field

Ferrari also set the early pace in LMGT3 during the morning, with Alessio Rovera edging Finn Gehrsitz by just 0.038 seconds in a tightly packed session featuring five manufacturers in the top five within a quarter of a second.
Nicky Catsburg placed third for Corvette, with BMW and Mercedes AMG entries completing the leading group.
In the afternoon, the order shuffled as Mattia Drudi put Aston Martin on top for Heart of Racing, narrowly ahead of Rovera’s Ferrari.
Tom Fleming’s McLaren followed in third, with TF Sport’s Corvette duo of Charlie Eastwood and Jonny Edgar completing a top five covered by just 0.178 seconds.
The consistently tight gaps highlight the depth of competition in LMGT3 heading into the race weekend.
With Ferrari setting the pace but the field rapidly converging, the Prologue underlined just how competitive the 2026 season is shaping up to be ahead of Sunday’s six-hour opener.
Track action resumes with free practice on Friday before qualifying and Hyperpole on Saturday, with the six-hour race set to launch the 2026 season on Sunday at 13:00 CEST.
