Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez is undergoing a significant renovation ahead of this year’s Mexico City Grand Prix as organisers move to keep the iconic venue aligned with Formula 1’s evolving technical and commercial demands.

Mexican promoter CIE confirmed on this week that work worth $10-million has begun at the historic circuit, which has hosted Formula 1 since its return to the calendar in 2015.
The upgrades are aimed at adapting the 4.304-kilometre track to Formula 1’s latest regulations, introduced this season, while also improving infrastructure around the venue.
The German engineering company Tilke is overseeing the project, which includes resurfacing sections of the asphalt, maintenance of the drainage system and repairs to the red-and-white kerbing around the circuit.
The drainage improvements have become increasingly important following years of heavy rainfall in Mexico City, which has regularly affected the area surrounding the Magdalena Mixhuca sports complex.
Another major focus is the paddock area, Formula 1’s operational hub during race weekends where drivers, engineers and mechanics work throughout the event.
“This investment represents our commitment to preserving the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez as a world-class venue,” said Federico González Compeán, director of the Mexican Grand Prix.

Mexico currently holds a Formula 1 contract through 2028

Organisers insisted the construction schedule will not interfere with concerts and other events hosted at the adjacent GNP stadium complex.
Unlike the widespread disruption caused by infrastructure works linked to the 2026 FIFA World Cup across Mexico City, the circuit renovations are expected to have only a limited local impact. The main inconvenience is likely to affect cyclists and runners who use the track during public access sessions.
Mexico currently holds a Formula 1 contract through 2028 after signing a fresh extension in 2025 with support from Formula 1 management, local promoters and city authorities.
El Pais reports that the event remains one of Formula 1’s strongest commercial successes. According to organisers, the 2025 Mexico City Grand Prix generated over a billion dollars for the Mexican economy during race week, while tickets again sold out almost immediately after going on sale.
With global demand for Formula 1 races continuing to grow, maintaining the circuit to the championship’s standards remains vital for securing Mexico City’s long-term place on the calendar.
