McLaren believe execution will be decisive at Silverstone as Formula 1's ultra-competitive 2026 season heads to the team's home race, where Lando Norris returns as defending British Grand Prix winner and world champion.

McLaren heads into its home race at Silverstone determined to build on last year's memorable British Grand Prix victory, with the team expecting another fiercely contested battle at the front during Formula 1's fourth Sprint weekend of the 2026 season.
The Woking-based squad arrives at one of Formula 1's most iconic venues after an encouraging run of performances, but believes the competitive picture remains too close to call despite the differing characteristics of the Silverstone circuit.
Senior Director of Racing Randy Singh said: "The last few events have demonstrated just how incredibly tight the competition is at the front of the grid, with three different winning drivers in the last three races. We expect this intensity to continue across the front running teams in Mercedes, Ferrari, Red Bull, and ourselves, making it vital that we optimise and maximise every aspect of our package."
Silverstone's fast, flowing layout presents a different challenge to the recent races in Austria and Spain, while the Sprint format places even greater emphasis on extracting maximum performance from the limited track time available.
Singh explained: "Silverstone itself is a circuit dominated by long straights and high-speed corners, but the lower-speed, technical sections are equally critical. Efficiency is paramount, especially with the extra challenge this week around high energy management and finding the right deployment during the Sprint weekend sessions. The drivers therefore need absolute confidence in the car to extract the most from those high-speed sections where small differences have a significant impact on overall lap time."

Tyre management crucial

McLaren expects tyre management to become another decisive factor, particularly if the forecast hot conditions materialise. However, the team is also preparing for the possibility of the unpredictable British weather complicating proceedings across the weekend.
Singh added: "While Silverstone is a more flowing circuit compared to recent rounds in Austria and Spain, the high-speed corners combined with the expected challenging conditions will place unique demands on the tyres."
"We are preparing for a dry, hot weekend, which brings the challenge of managing tyres overheating, though we remain mindful of the potential for unpredictable thunderstorms. With this being a Sprint weekend, the limited practice time means we must hit the ground running and the ability to learn quickly through the Sprint sessions and apply those insights to the main Qualifying and Race will likely be the defining factor in such a competitive field."
The team will also unveil a special one-off heritage-inspired livery created in partnership with Google Gemini, paying tribute to the McLaren M2B, the team's first Formula 1 car that debuted in 1966.
Lando Norris returns to Silverstone for the first time as reigning Formula 1 world champion, with the Briton once again set to receive vocal backing from more than 16,000 fans packed into the famous Landostand at Stowe Corner.

McLaren have special livery for Silverstone

McLaren has unveiled a special one-off livery for this weekend's British Grand Prix, celebrating the team's Formula 1 origins while highlighting its growing partnership with Google Gemini.
The heritage-inspired design pays tribute to the McLaren M2B, the team's first Formula 1 car, which debuted at the 1966 Monaco Grand Prix. That same season, founder Bruce McLaren scored the team's first championship point at Silverstone, making the circuit the perfect venue to honour the milestone.
The livery forms part of McLaren's ongoing heritage celebrations following its 1,000th Formula 1 Grand Prix earlier this season. It also reflects the team's "Spark What's Next" campaign with Google Gemini, linking six decades of innovation from the M2B to today's MCL40.
Beyond the special colours, McLaren is increasingly using Gemini Enterprise to support trackside operations, helping engineers analyse sporting regulations and access critical performance data more quickly during race weekends. Fans can also see the livery up close at the free Gemini Paddock experience in London throughout the British Grand Prix weekend.
Away from the current championship fight, McLaren will celebrate another important milestone when 1981 British Grand Prix winner John Watson drives the legendary MP4/1 in a demonstration run on Saturday. Watson's victory at Silverstone marked the first Formula 1 Grand Prix win for a full carbon fibre chassis, a breakthrough that transformed the technical future of the sport.
