Kimi Antonelli is well aware his Formula 1 title fight is entering an important phase, with Ferrari closing the gap and Mercedes rethinking rules of engagement governing how he and teammate George Russell race each other.

The Mercedes youngster arrives at this weekend's Austrian Grand Prix leading the Drivers' Championship by 41 points, but his commanding run of five consecutive victories came to an abrupt end in Barcelona after retiring from P2 with only three laps remaining.
That retirement, combined with Lewis Hamilton's breakthrough Ferrari victory, has cut into Antonelli's advantage and underlined how quickly momentum can shift. Ferrari also arrive in Spielberg with an updated power unit, adding another layer to what is becoming a genuine three-way fight at the front.
Asked what concerned him most, whether Hamilton's resurgence, Russell's pace or Mercedes' reliability, Antonelli refused to single out one threat: "All of them. But it's not worried or concerned. I'm aware that it's not going to be a walk in the park. It's going to be a tough battle because George is super quick and Lewis is in a great moment and is feeling the car and momentum.
"It definitely is going to be a tough battle; that's why it's going to be important to maximise every opportunity because at Barcelona I had the issue at the end and lost a lot of points. Whenever I can, I just need to maximise everything because you never know what can happen.

Mercedes adjust approach after Barcelona battle

"I wouldn't write off the others either. I think you look at what Max did last year coming back from so far; that's why it's important to always be present, stay focused and just do your best," added the 19-year-old Italian.
Barcelona also prompted fresh thinking inside Mercedes after Antonelli and Russell fought each other on track while Hamilton escaped up the road following the Virtual Safety Car.
Team Principal Toto Wolff suggested after the race that the team may need to rethink how freely its drivers battle if the championship is at stake. Antonelli confirmed that those discussions have already led to a revised approach heading into Austria.
"How we go racing, I think it will really depend on the situation," Wolff explained. "If we are under threat by other teams, then we will race differently, but if it's just me and him, we are going to be able to race free."
The comments suggest Mercedes are prepared to intervene strategically whenever Ferrari or another rival can capitalise on an intra-team fight, while still allowing Antonelli and Russell to race naturally when the circumstances permit.

Hamilton emerges as biggest championship danger

Hamilton's victory in Spain transformed the complexion of the championship after Mercedes had dominated the opening phase of the 2026 season.
The Ferrari driver is now Antonelli's closest challenger, while the Scuderia have reduced Mercedes' lead in the Constructors' Championship after introducing significant upgrades in Barcelona and another power unit development for Austria.
Antonelli's lead remains healthy, but the teenager knows consistency, rather than outright speed alone, will likely decide the title. Barcelona cost him 18 valuable points, while Hamilton capitalised perfectly to reignite Ferrari's campaign.
Spielberg now becomes another significant test. Mercedes has been the benchmark throughout the season, but Ferrari's improving pace means Antonelli can no longer rely solely on raw performance. Every finish, every strategy call and every battle with Russell could now influence the destination of the championship.
If Barcelona was the turning point that brought Ferrari back into contention, Austria could reveal whether the title fight has become a genuine season-long battle between Formula 1's newest championship leader and its most successful driver.
