Ferrari heads into Sunday's Austrian Grand Prix believing victory is possible after Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton delivered an unexpected result in Formula 1 Qualifying at Red Bull Ring at Red Bull Ring.

George Russell denied the Scuderia pole position with a brilliant final lap, but Ferrari left Spielberg qualifying convinced it has taken another significant step forward.
Russell claimed pole despite lifting for yellow flags after Max Verstappen crashed on his final Q3 lap. Leclerc finished just 0.236 seconds behind in second. Hamilton secured third after recovering from a mistake on his first Q3 run. Ferrari will start with both cars split between the two Mercedes.
The result completed an impressive turnaround after Friday's difficult practice sessions. Overnight setup changes transformed the SF-26. Ferrari's latest power unit upgrade also appears to have delivered another small but important gain.
Hamilton praised the work completed behind the scenes after the team struggled for pace on Friday: "I'm pleased with today's result, especially considering the improvements we made after Friday.
"The team did an amazing job overnight to understand the issues and make the right changes, and the car felt much better today. From Q1 through to Q3, the execution was excellent and everyone did a fantastic job."

Hamilton: Another step in that direction

The seven-time Formula 1 world champion believes Ferrari's steady development is beginning to produce visible results: "We're continuing to make progress through lots of small improvements.
"The updated power unit is another step in that direction, and it's great to see everyone at the factory continuing to push race after race to help us move forward. I'm really proud of the work we've done together, and it's encouraging to see it starting to pay off."
Hamilton admitted qualifying could have been even better: "I left a little bit on the table with my first run in Q3, which was on me, and that affected a bit how I approached the final attempt," he said. "But overall, I'm happy with where we've ended up and we'll keep pushing."
Leclerc's front-row start carried extra significance after two painful race weekends. Crashes in Monaco and Barcelona qualifying were followed by mechanical retirements on both Sundays. The Ferrari driver admitted those setbacks affected his confidence.
"I'm a bit happier but then I'm never really satisfied unless I'm on pole or I win," Leclerc said. "It's been a long time as well so I just hope this changes very quickly."
The Monegasque acknowledged he has become more cautious since those disappointments. His priority has shifted towards rebuilding confidence before chasing absolute performance.

Leclerc: I'm leaving a little bit of margin on the table

"I cannot lie," he admitted. "Since then you have a bit of a mentality of just trying to do a clean lap and having a clean weekend. I feel like I'm leaving a little bit of margin on the table in qualifying, which is normal after the last few weekends. I just hope I get back to the level of confidence I had before to try and extract more from this car."
Despite Ferrari's progress, Leclerc believes Mercedes remains the benchmark around the Red Bull Ring. He expects Sunday's race to be difficult: "They seem to be very strong and they were very strong on Friday but I don't give up. I'll try everything and we'll see how it goes but at the moment I think Mercedes has an advantage."
Hamilton reached a similar conclusion after qualifying. However, he highlighted just how much Ferrari had reduced the deficit since Friday practice.
"I think we made progress overnight and we closed the gap a little bit – half the gap," Hamilton explained. "We were six tenths down and now, today, we were just under three tenths so that's a real positive."
The Ferrari driver hopes strategy can help compensate for Mercedes' outright speed. Starting between Russell and championship leader Kimi Antonelli could create opportunities during the race.
"The good thing is there's two Ferraris there sandwiched between the two Mercedes," Hamilton said. "Hopefully we can execute the strategy to really keep them on the heels."

Vasseur: I'm taking the positives

Team principal Fred Vasseur preferred to focus on Ferrari's performance rather than missing pole in dramatic circumstances. Russell improved despite lifting for Verstappen's accident. Vasseur saw far more positives than frustrations.
"No," Vasseur said when asked if he felt disappointed. "First I'm taking the positive that we are second and third, that we are in the fight with Mercedes in the quali and able probably to have good pace for tomorrow."
The Frenchman praised the work completed overnight by both the trackside engineers and the factory in Maranello. Ferrari found a much stronger balance from final practice onwards.
"We can be satisfied with today's result," Vasseur said. "In qualifying we improved from session to session and both drivers put together strong performances, which confirms the progress we made from yesterday."
"After a challenging Friday, with Charles missing the first session to give Dino some track time, the team, both here at the track and back in Maranello, did an excellent job overnight. From FP3 onwards we found a much better balance and took an important step forward."

Winning the Grand Prix on strategy

Vasseur dismissed suggestions Leclerc's recent mistakes reflected any loss of speed. He insisted the pace had always been present. Saturday simply allowed the Ferrari driver to convert it into a clean result.
"It was more you journalists who were a bit worried," Vasseur joked. "I was not, honestly. The pace was always there."
Attention now turns towards Sunday's race in extreme Austrian heat. Tyre degradation is expected to play a decisive role. Ferrari believes strategy could once again become its greatest weapon.
"Now our full focus is on tomorrow's race," Vasseur said. "We expect the temperatures to remain very high, which means tyre management will be a key factor. Making the right strategic decisions and managing the tyres throughout the race will be essential if we want to make the most of the strong starting positions we've earned today."
Ferrari executed perfectly in Barcelona to secure Hamilton's first victory for the team. The Scuderia knows repeating that performance will not be easy. However, after placing both cars inside the top three, confidence is growing that another opportunity could arrive in Spielberg.
