This weekend we will see the 74th running of the British Grand Prix, 56 of those races were held at Silverstone. So who is the King of the Airfield that has been on the Formula 1 calendar since 1950?

In recent years, when Mercedes ruled the roost, British fans were treated to memorable races with a record eight victories to the delight of Hamilton's appreciative home F1 fans. The crowd-surfing scenes after Hamilton's victories are images etched into the history of our sport.
Indeed the analysis by Bet365 showed that Lewis Hamilton is the top points scorer at Silverstone (adjusted as per today's scoring system - explained in detail below). Followed by Kimi Raikkonen and Michael Schumacher.
F1 legend Emerson Fittipaldi who drove for British teams, Lotus and McLaren, explained: "When you race at home, to me the highest pressure was in Brazil and then England, because both my teams were based in England and we were racing close to their home facilities."
Three British drivers feature in the Silverstone top 10 - Lewis Hamilton, Nigel Mansell and David Coulthard.
  • Lewis Hamilton is the undisputed points leader at Silverstone with 312 points and a record eight victories at the circuit
  • Raikkonen and Schumacher are tied for second place with 186 points - the latter has a better points-per-race figure
  • Three British drivers are in the top 10 when it comes to points - Hamilton (1st), Nigel Mansell (8th) and David Coulthard (9th)
  • Max Verstappen is 15th in the all-time leaderboard
  • Peter Revson has the best points per race - 25 - as he won at his only ever appearance at Silverstone
  • Hamilton has the best points-per-race number - 18.35 - for drivers with more than 10 races at Silverstone
  • 21 winners at Silverstone have come from pole position, with the pole-to-win percentage being 36.84 percent
  • Hamilton and Mansell are the only two drivers to do a Grand Slam at Silverstone with the latter doing it twice in 1991 and 1992 and Hamilton in 2017

Fittipaldi elaborated on the home track advantage: "You give 110 percent at home races and it was so rewarding to win at home. To win a home country grand prix is special for both the driver and the team. Every time Lewis won, Nigel won, David won, Jackie won, Jim Clark won, they were special occasions.
"When I won the first world championship race in Brazil, I was so pumped up, so motivated to win. I took the pressure in a positive way. To win and I had to do my best. As long as athletes take the extra motivation and pressure in a positive way, for sure it helps racing at home," explained the double F1 World Champion.

The following methodology was used to establish the result:

  • We scraped the results of 57 races held at Silverstone from 1950 to present
  • As F1's scoring systems have changed over the years, for uniformity, we assigned points as per the current scoring system to all 57 races and 383 drivers
  • That means that in races where for example, only the top six scored points, we gave points to the top 10 finishers as per the current scoring system
  • After assigning points to all drivers based on their results, we generated the leaderboard
