Max Verstappen dominated the Mexican Grand Prix, controlling the race from the moment he elbowed his way into the lead on the opening lap, and admits that controlling a race the way he did at Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez is the best way to get the job done.
Asked if he enjoyed winning the way he did on the day, the Red Bull driver replied, "Yes, because this is winning - and I think this is the most beautiful way of doing it."
In the few seasons since he burst onto the Formula 1 scene, Verstappen has rewritten the rules of engagement and shown no fear in going toe-to-toe with the best in the sport and, more often than not, coming out on top.
But in truth the 20 year old Dutchman wants to race off into the distance, in control and unchallenged, as he did on Mexico, "Of course, overtaking is fun, but in recent years I've never been in a position that I could control races."
"This is what I did in karting, actually, and in the end this is what you want to do. Overtaking is definitely nice, but to me it's not something that's necessary. Ultimately you want to win races like [Lewis] Hamilton and eventually win a championship."
Therefire it os no surprise that Verstappen is proud of his third career win in F1, "This is certainly one of my favourite ones of course, because you not only won the race, you also controlled it, without any pressure from behind. I hope that we will be in the same position next year. From the very first race."
The decisive move of the Mexican Grand Prix was when the Red Bull driver, from second on the grid, wrestled his way past top spot starting Sebastian Vettel through the first three corners of the race, out-braking the Ferrari into Turn 1 then going side-by-side through the right-left complex before emerging out of Turn 3 a car length ahead.
Completing the move, he accelerated away from the melee behind him and he chirped over the radio: "Simply, simply lovely." The rest is history...
Verstappen said of the move, "I totally did not think about it beforehand. I haven't even watched back the races of the last few years to see what happened there. So I just did my own thing."
"If I see that there is an opportunity to make a move on the outside, then I will just try and make a move on the outside. This is all feeling. It's pure instinct."
"I have never [thought about the start], not in karting either. My father has never told me how to do a start either. So it's just pure feeling," added Verstappen.
