But amongst some of the most dramatic moments in Formula 1 history, there are still various events that have left fans stunned and confused by what has unfolded before their eyes. Few spectacles rarely rival the energy of a Grand Prix weekend.

The excitement surrounding the sport has even inspired themed attractions and references across wider entertainment and leisure industries - from documentaries and gaming titles to the glamorous backdrops often associated with a casino setting.

Over the 70+ years that F1 has graced the motorsport world, there have been various peculiar situations that are spoken about each year and become a part of today’s racing heritage, which is what we will be looking at today.

The Trulli train was a confusing mix of slow-paced racing and a frustrating tactical setup that caused headaches for other drivers and crews. Jarno Trulli was an Italian driver who spent most of his time with Renault and Toyota, which is where this strange racing strategy came into play.

Trulli would finish with an extremely quick pace in the qualifiers, but when it came to the race itself, he would take on a slow pace, holding up the quicker cars on the track. The tactic evidently didn’t work for the Italian, winning only once in his career in Monaco 2004.

His driving style became so amusing that it was given the name ‘The Trulli Train’, which is a term still heard today, even forcing the implementation of future overtaking rules as a result.

One of the biggest scandals in F1 history shook the world, with a stunt that went under the radar for a whole year until it was outed by the driver himself.

Often referred to as the ‘Crashgate’ scandal, Renault F1 was temporarily banned from the sport as a result of match fixing, after making driver Nelson Piquet Jr crash on lap 14 so that teammate Fernando Alonso, who had pitted early, could leapfrog the drivers and win the GP.

The strategy was released in 2009 when Renault dropped Piquet, resulting in members of the Renault team being initially permanently banned. The predetermined crash and race fixing had never been seen before, shocking everyone associated with F1.

On the final lap of the British GP in 1991, Ayrton Senna’s McLaren ran out of fuel, forcing the driver to park on the side of the track away from other drivers.

After Nigel Mansell won the GP for Williams, he spotted Senna at the side of the track and allowed the driver to climb onto his car and hang from the sidepod, taking him all the way back to the pits.

While nowadays this would not be allowed to happen as a result of safety concerns, it is an iconic moment of two rivals coming together, resulting in a moment that has been immortalised in F1 history.

In the Malaysian GP in 2013, one of the most eye-opening events happened as it highlighted the backstage issues that were occurring within Red Bull’s race team.

Going into the last moments of the race, car 1, driven by Sebastian Vettel, and car 2, driven by Mark Webber, were heading into the final stretch and given a code ‘Multi 21’, meaning for the drivers to hold the position so that car 2 would win the GP.

Going against his team’s wishes, Vettel overtook Webber and ended up finishing the race in 1st place, which caused conflict between the two drivers. Webber announced his departure from Red Bull only a few months later, but denied that the effects of the Malaysian GP forced his decision.

One of the more comedic peculiar moments in F1 history occurred in 2019 at the Baku GP, when George Russel1, driving for Williams at the time, hit a loose manhole cover, destroying the underside and chassis of the car in FP1.

Only a single lap had been timed by Charles Leclerc when the incident occurred, resulting in a red flag. As a result, FP1 was cancelled and FP2 was delayed, with all the manholes being welded down. What makes the event even more unlikely was the recovery vehicle hitting a bridge, leaking hydraulic fluid all over the car as it made its way back for repair.

This had a massive financial impact on Williams, one of the smaller teams, but overall was a very peculiar moment as a result of the poor race management.

In 1994 at the German GP, Jos Verstappen was engulfed in a ball of flames as a result of a fueling issue. When fuel had run down the side of the hot car and towards the exhaust, a massive explosion of flames covered the driver and the pit crew.

Spectators noticed the massive ball of fire erupt, somehow not seriously injuring anybody. After the strange scene, it was found that Benetton had illegally modified their fuel rig to make the refuelling process quicker, which was why the fuel had split.

This scary, yet mesmerising moment left viewers in shock and played a part in the rule change, which prevents mid-race fuelling.
