While the Formula 1 world focuses on testing ahead of the season-opening Bahrain Grand Prix next weekend, behind the scenes at Ferrari the matter of extending Carlos Sainz's contract is a priority.
Sainz has ensconced himself well at Ferrari since his arrival, beating Charles Leclerc in the championship after their first F1 season together was a signal of intent from the Spaniard who clearly stated: I am equal number one in this team.
And, by doing the talking on track, Sainz has grown in estimation at Maranello who have clearly unearthed a gem of a driver, who also knows his own value.
While all around him, drivers of his generation are being contracted long-term (and big-bucks) with Red Bull
inking a big deal with Max Verstappen, as McLaren have done
with Lando Norris and his own Ferrari team with Leclerc.
Binotto: We are working on the contract every day
Speaking to Italian journos during the three days in Bahrain, Sainz said: "It's no secret that we are in the renewal phase what I don't know exactly is when the time will come when we will agree on everything.
"We are all happy, there is progress," revealed Sainz, who will be starting his second season in Red and will line up for his 141st Grand Prix start in Bahrain on Sunday 20 March.
Ferrari team boss Mattia Binotto agreed with his driver: "We are working on it every day, the intent is common and it's just a matter of details to get to the conclusion."
Sainz is a hot property, particularly in Spain where he is expected to take over the mantle of Fernando Alonso to keep F1 passion burning in Spain where traditionally MotoGP is king.
As a result, Ferrari is adorned with Spanish companies seeking affiliation with their driver, including a big deal renewal with banking giant Santander and Estrella Galicia beer.
Right now Sainz and Ferrari are a match made in heaven, thus no surprise an extension is imminent. Expect an announcement soon.
