After a slightly heated debate this week in the comments section here on GP247, I left with my rear end burnt off.
The criticism against me was fair, as it always is, just a difference of opinion. But it did make me wonder about the two classes of F1 we seem to be having? Those with huge budgets against those a billionaire might almost be able to afford?
Then there was Bernie Ecclestone’s suggesting recently of having two championships running concurrently, for the have and have nots. Effectively to eliminate manufacturers from one championship to give private, and solely dedicated, racing teams a chance at glory.
Ultimately the question to me became what if you removed the top three teams and gave out points to the ones remaining?
So out comes my trusty Excel spreadsheet for testing different points schemes and after a little bit of reprogramming cells to do what I want them to do, I have now been able to remove drivers, and then re-allocate points on their finishing positions.
As good as the spreadsheet is, it can’t do fastest laps and that would require more information than I have to hand.
So, what if Mercedes wasn’t in the championship? We would an epic battle between Verstappen and Vettel!
Now we remove the Ferrari drivers, and what then? Not really much of a surprise to see Verstappen and Gasly leading, but now we have a McLaren in third!
Removing Red Bull shouldn’t bring any further surprises, but it does! Perez is now up to third!
McLaren with Sainz would be leading the championship from Alfa Romeo. And I’ve just very nicely proven I rightly had my rear end roasted…
If there was a battle for the midfield and we could allocate points as we do with the championship as we have now, we’d have a different picture entirely. With six drivers eliminated from this contest you can see how those consistently finishing high but out of the points gain.
We’ve got three teams locking out the first six places, with only four points paying position left for the entire mid-field to scrabble over.
Big Question: Should Formula 1 extend the points further down the grid?
