Russell-Mercedes-W17-Shakedown-2026

The Mercedes AMG PETRONAS F1 Team has completed the first on track outing of its 2026 Formula 1 challenger, the Mercedes AMG F1 W17 E PERFORMANCE, with a shakedown run at Silverstone Circuit on 22 January.

A mere few hours after Mercedes launched their 2026 car livery online, and in wet conditions on the 2.979 km International Circuit, the W17 was shared between race drivers George Russell and Kimi Antonelli, completing a total of 67 laps.
The programme delivered just under 200 km of mileage, allowing the team to conduct initial system checks and give both drivers their first experience of the new generation F1 car.
Mercedes' Trackside Engineering Director Andrew Shovlin described the day as a controlled and productive opening run.
He said: “We have had a sensible first day of running with the W17 at Silverstone. As with any shakedown, the focus is on ensuring everything operates safely and reliably.
"We were able to get through our allotted mileage, with both George and Kimi getting to experience the 2026 car on track for the first time," Shovlin added. "That is testament to the hard work of everyone at Brackley and Brixworth.
"Our attention now turns to Barcelona where we will look to build on today’s running and add to our understanding of the W17," he concluded.
Following the Silverstone shakedown, Mercedes now heads to Spain for the first multi day test of the new regulations.
The team has three days of running scheduled during the five day Barcelona test from 26 to 30 January.
The test will be done behind closed doors but Mercedes have promised daily end of day updates to be issued to media, including further quotes from drivers and senior personnel.
Mercedes finished the 2025 F1 season second in the Constructors' Championship behind Champions McLaren.
