Lawrence Stroll has spent a fortune on his son's racing career, most recently dropping another $110-million to purchase Force India to continue Lance Stroll's Formula 1 dream, but the Canadian billionaire claims he is just a regular guy, a petrolhead, indulging his passion.
Forbes lists the 59-year-old’s net worth at US$2.7-billion, having made his fortune by investing in the Pierre Cardin, Ralph Lauren, Tommy Hilfiger and Asprey & Garrard fashion lines.
But Stroll senior insists, “I just think I’m a guy like any other guy. Most guys love cars. I fell in love with them at a very early age. I had posters on my wall growing up of my favourite cars.”
His only son, Lance had an impressive rookie season which included a podium at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, but this year with Williams has produced a lemon of a car and as a result the teenager has struggled, hence the Force India purchase.
Despite the lack of results for his son, Lawrence pointed out, "I’m most proud of how wonderful, humble, mature he is. He has a great head on his shoulders, especially for a 19-year-old kid. A lot of these guys here in the paddock, their heads are quite swollen and very different. Lance doesn’t have any of that in him. That’s not in his DNA.”
Stroll senior explained his son's passion for racing. “He used to accompany me as a young boy, 4, 5, 6 years old. We had an extremely close relationship then and we still do now. I guess that’s where he caught the bug."
"Then he started go-karting not far from here in Saint-Hilaire as a hobby, like kids play baseball or football or hockey. He took to it and had a passion for it. Obviously, a lot of talent, too. He won almost everything there was to win and he just really enjoyed driving,” explained proud Dad.
