After basically asking Max Verstappen to retire from Formula 1 when the latter said he didn't enjoy the new-for-2026 cars, Lando Norris has now backtracked on his statements.
Verstappen blasted the 2026 F1 cars,
likening them to Formula E due to the excessive management required when driving them instead of the flat-out driving the four-time F1 Champion enjoys.
At the time,
Norris responded that he is enjoying the challenge of driving the 2026 F1 cars while saying the Dutchman can always retire if he is unhappy.
However, speaking to the media on Thursday in Bahrain, Norris was asked about his stance on the new cars and his feelings about Verstappen's comments.
The reigning F1 Champion delivered a surprising answer; he said: "I don’t want to complain. It has been an amazing week. I wanted to see everyone's reaction.
"The cars are still a challenge," he pointed out. "It is very different than last year. I agree with Max on lots of his comments. I do agree with the comments of most of the drivers.
"I don’t want to complain on the first weekend. I had fun last week and out there now. F1 is trying to improve the car we have now.
"It is not the purest form of racing," Norris admitted. "We are focused on getting the batteries to work and not to get the most out of the cars."
Verstappen may have been the most blunt in his assessment, while the likes of
Lewis Hamilton and
Fernando Alonso delivered a similar verdict but in a more diplomatic way.
George Russell, on the other hand, called for patience and to give the new rules a chance. However, he couldn't resist taking a swipe at Verstappen, saying the Red Bull ace can always
go racing at the Nürburgring.
