Williams reserve Robert Kubica is tired of reporters asking about his "limitations" and said as much after he completed an impressive run on the second afternoon of 2018 Formula 1 preseason testing at Circuit de Catalunya near Barcelona.
Kubica, who narrowly missed out on a race seat with Williams, has nevertheless been retained to support Lance Stroll and Sergey Sirotkin in a secondary role as development and reserve driver.
On Tuesday, after his first preseason test since 2011 before a freak rally crash halted his career, Kubica completed 58 trouble-free laps with a best lap time of 1:21.495 which was the fastest time of all three Williams drivers thus far during the test.
Afterwards, he appealed to media to move on with regards to reporting about his ability to function at 100%, "I've been always comfortable [in the car]. It was only media talks that I was not comfortable."
"If I keep changing [the car] you [the media] will keep saying I have limitations. I think we should stop. If I can jump in the car and do the job that should be enough."
"I have my limitations which I never hide. The problem is I was too honest with everyone and they keep asking the same questions."
"I'm living a good period, enjoying my role and I'm hoping to give a positive message and not the same story after many years," explained Kubica.
On Tuesday, after his afternoon at the wheel of the Williams FW31, he added, "I think we have achieved the maximum we could do due to the weather and general track temperatures. I got my first feeling for the car, and saw what we were able to do in difficult conditions."
"It is not easy to jump into a new car with such difficult weather conditions and have the confidence to push, but I think we did some important work, although it was short."
"However, it gave us, and especially myself, an idea of how to work better for the future to address some areas where we can improve the car. The car has some very powerful areas, but, in the meantime, we need to work on some issues which I am sure we will get on top of."
"If we do that then the driveability, and also the confidence of the driver will be higher," concluded Kubica who will be on duty again on Wednesday afternoon in Spain, taking over the FW31 from Lance Stroll who will drive during the morning session.
