Despite double points finish at the season-opening Australian Grand Prix, Renault driver Nico Hulkenberg admits that this year his team has not delivered a car to match their preseason expectations.
Speaking to reporters ahead of the Bahrain Grand Prix weekend, Hulkenberg was refreshingly honest when he revealed the problem with the Renault RS18, "The balance is not good enough really. No. Performance not..."
"Balance wise and car characteristics, it is not what we wanted to have and where we wanted to be. We are a bit behind expectations there I would say."
Asked if setting up the car more appropriately for him would resolve the problem, he replied, "I think we need something more substantial to get that out and get better."
As for that elusive first podium, Hulkenberg said, "Unless something crazy happens at the top - like last year in Singapore - it's not within reach, unfortunately, we cannot keep up with the top three teams, they're too fast."
Asked when he thought Renault would be in the fight for podiums, the German replied, "I would love to say it will work soon, but right now I have to say no to that. I would like a podium finish on my record, but it does not concern me very much."
On the upside, Hulkenberg pointed out, "We are not further away, but we are not any closer. The season is still young and we have a lot of time ahead of us. From race four or five major updates are coming. We've planned aggressive aerodynamic developments and how we improve will depend on that."
