A feature-length documentary exploring the life of Formula 1 world champion and legend James Hunt is in production, with Damon Hill and Bernie Ecclestone among the motorsport legends contributing to the narrative.

Deadline reports that "Hunt: We Need to Talk About James" documentary is being made with the support of the Hunt estate and is planned for release in 2026, marking 50 years since Hunt’s dramatic 1976 title triumph.
The film will examine how Hunt became one of Formula 1’s most recognisable and enduring characters while looking beyond the rebellious playboy image that followed him throughout his career. Hunt died in 1993 at the age of 45, having later become a popular television commentator following his retirement from racing.
Benjamin Field will direct and produce the documentary through production company Deep Fusion, with John Gore serving as executive producer. Ewan Atkinson is producing alongside the Hunt estate, while Jamie Anderson is also an executive producer, Richard Wiseman is archive producer and BAFTA-nominated composer Sam Gale will provide the score.
Field said the project will present a more complete picture of Hunt’s personality, career and private life: “This film aims to do for James Hunt what Senna did for Ayrton Senna, delivering a rare treat for F1 and motorsport fans globally as well as for classic documentary enthusiasts who love a great story.”

A very human story about a Formula 1 icon

Field continued: “Hunt: We Need to Talk About James is a very human story, painting a complete picture of a man who was definitely flawed, totally driven but also an unexpectedly private figure. The film presents a rounded picture of a very human being.”
Field also described directing the documentary as a personal project after growing up listening to Hunt’s commentary: “Hunt remains one of the most beloved British sporting icons and this film means a great deal to me personally. Growing up listening to his commentary made me into the F1 fan I am today, so directing this documentary is a real honour and a privilege.”
Hunt’s son Freddie believes the film will challenge the caricature often presented of his father. He said: “Dad has so often been painted as something of a caricature. I’m hugely excited that, for the first time, the world will see both sides of the man – and already during filming, stories have come to light that have never been spoken about before.”
Field previously directed Gerry Anderson: A Life Uncharted, which used artificial intelligence technology to repurpose archive audio and recreate the Thunderbirds creator discussing his life and career. No exact release date has yet been announced for the Hunt documentary.
