With only six Grand Prix weekends left in the 2024 Formula 1 season, McLaren finds itself leading the constructors' championship for the first time in over a decade.

The British team, powered by the consistent performances of Lando Norris and rookie sensation Oscar Piastri, has become a formidable force this season. So much so that former F1 driver turned pundit Johnny Herbert is excited about the prospect of the great Woking team doing the business for the first time since Lewis Hamilton won their last F1 Drivers' Championship in 2008.
McLaren has not won the F1 constructor's title since 1998. But that could change as they head into the final stretch this season where they hold the upper hand in the fight for both the F1 constructors' big prize and, with help from Lady Luck, a shot at the drivers' title, with Norris and Piastri consistently at the front of the grid and battling for wins.
The task ahead, however, is far from easy. Max Verstappen, the three-time reigning champion, will be determined to defend his crown and secure a fourth title. While the Dutch ace leads the drivers' standings, his Red Bull teammate, Sergio Perez, has struggled for form, leaving Max isolated in his battle at the sharp end.
This has given McLaren an opportunity to seize the initiative, especially if Norris and Piastri can work together in the final races. Which is reportedly the plan after a few awkward races involving the pair this year.

As the title battle heads towards its climax, all eyes are on the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, where the championship could be decided, but before that, a lot can happen, starting with the forthcoming United States Grand Prix in Austin.
Speaking to the media team at Vision4Sport, Herbert weighed in on the potential showdown, noting the excitement around McLaren’s resurgence: "It would be amazing to see McLaren win the Constructors' title.
"Max Verstappen and Lando Norris will need to bring their best to win the 2024 Drivers' Championship," reckoned the 60-year-old Briton, while he praised McLaren's consistency this season, highlighting their car's versatility across different tracks, which could be crucial in Abu Dhabi.
Herbert continued: "McLaren's car just works, no matter the track. They’re especially strong with traction, and that’s key in Abu Dhabi with its mix of long- radii and tight corners. That makes the journey to the final race even more exciting, especially for British fans who want to see Lando win his first championship."
Herbert also pointed out Red Bull's recent struggles: "An edgy car can be quick, but you need to trust the rear will grip at the right time. Red Bull seems to be struggling, but Lando and McLaren still seem to have more to give."

Looking ahead to Abu Dhabi, Herbert reflected on his own experience driving the track, describing it as both exhilarating and challenging: "It’s really enjoyable and gives you a great sense of speed and challenge. But some corners are tough to overtake on, which makes for a thrilling race when it’s a battle for a championship."
Herbert is excited about the potential for a season finale that could go down to the wire: "That’s exactly what we fans want! Abu Dhabi has delivered that a couple of times before, and it's always thrilling. Whoever wins the championship there will have earned it."
As McLaren and Red Bull gear up for a fierce battle, fans are in for a gripping conclusion to the 2024 season. Whether it's Verstappen's fourth crown or Norris's first.
Whatever the outcome, one thing is certain: with three Sprint races in the mix, the final six Grand Prix weekends are equivalent to a half dozen Cup Finals for the Championship contenders.
