Reports in British tabloids are claiming that Nicole Scherzinger has split up with Formula 1 world champion Lewis Hamilton because he would not commit to marrying her.
The reports gathered steam during the course of the first preseason test at Jerez where Hamilton, normally good for a laugh, kept to himself and seldom cracked a grin.
Hamilton's relationship with his on-off girlfriend of seven years has hit the wall, apparently after a series of rows during the Christmas period when the couple holidayed in Colorado.
Scherzinger is quoted by the Mirror saying: "I'm devastated that it didn't work out."
"It really is over this time," a source told The Sun newspaper. "They’d been fighting for months but things had got much worse. They spend so much time apart that things just became untenable."
For some time it was reported that they were in the process of getting engaged, but The Sun reports that "Scherzinger finally called time on the relationship after becoming convinced Hamilton would never propose."
This is not the first time the pair have split, but this episode of the relationship appears to be the final one as the two struggle to find time in their respective careers to spend together.
Hamilton's career is at its zenith in the aftermath of his second F1 world title and he is focused on emulating his hero Ayrton Senna's three titles and making a true mark on the sport.
The age gap between the two is apparently another issue, as Scherzinger at 36 is six years older than Hamilton.
Speaking to E! late last year with regarding pressure to marry, Hamilton said, “I’m certainly feeling pressure, heat from family members. But Nicole’s massively focused on her work the same as I am. We’re happy just way we are.”
