Football and motorsport may seem like two completely different sports. But there are a few notable athletes who have managed to make the transition from one to the other with relative ease.

Here are three former footballers [soccer players for Americans] who have gone on to have racing careers after their successful years on the pitch, they turned to the tarmac:

Jerzy Dudek

Dudek then made the switch to racing in 2006, competing in the Porsche Carrera Cup Poland and the 24 Hours of Le Mans. He has also competed in the VLN Endurance Championship Nürburgring.
Dudek participated in the FNVL Varin Race Marathon in 2019 and finished 6th place with a time of 1 hour 21 minutes - setting an impressive personal best. He also won his first trophy by winning the Class 2 Championship of the German Touring Car Masters series back in 2013.
In 2017 and 2018 Dudek took to the track again and claimed back-to-back victories at Slovakia Ring in Bratislava. His impressive lap times earned him second place in the Super Compact class for the 2019 season opener; not bad for an amateur racer!

Max Kruse

He completed no less than 1200 laps overall with an admirable 6th-place finish. As a member of the AMG Driving Academy in 2019, he achieved one podium finish and four top 10 positions. Last year, Kruse hit a career milestone when he racked up four victories and six podium finishes to win his first series championship title at the ADAC GT4 Germany competition.
His passion for racing shines through in each race he takes part in, proving that you can pursue your passions ardently no matter what.

It's always interesting to see what athletes do after they retire from their first sport. For some, like Jerzy Dudek, Max Kruse, and Fabien Barthez, that meant trying their hand at racing. And while not all of them had sustained success, it's definitely impressive that they were able to make the transition from football to motorsport. Who knows, maybe we'll see more footballers making the switch in the future!
