Contrary to the belief, Mercedes driver George Russell believes racing in Silverstone this weekend will be great despite the power-deprived 2026 Formula 1 cars.
While his rivals have expressed concern about the state of racing during the
2026 British Grand Prix, which also runs under the Sprint format, Russell believes otherwise.
"I think Silverstone will be great," Russell said. "With these regs, we knew there were going to be some tracks that are more difficult than others for 22 drivers to experience.
"[There are] 600,000 fans here who probably don't care so much about energy management," the Mercedes driver claimed. "On the flip side, the tracks that are most challenging for the energy, such as Melbourne, China, they have so far produced better racing than we've seen in the past of those tracks.
"There's no doubt the tracks that are energy starved, the racing will be better. It probably will be a bit more chaotic. So you could look at that as the positive," Russell explained.
It seems that Russell is a fan of the yo-yo racing we have seen earlier this season, which was reduced a bit after the FIA and Formula One Management tweaked the rules to reduce super-clipping and manage deployment and charging parameters.
But with all due respect to Russell, the fans will know the difference when they see the cars crawling through Maggots, Becketts, and Chapel as opposed to going through them at speed with the drivers working hard to keep them in check.
However, the Briton does admit that Qualifying this weekend will be bad, and sadly we have to endure two sessions of that with Sprint Qualifying added in there as well on Friday.
Russell concluded: "But for sure, a single-lap qualifying is not going to be as fast as we've seen in the years gone by."
Russell is targeting a first home win at this weekend's British Grand Prix after winning
last time out in Austria.
