Bernie Ecclestone was back in the Red Bull Ring paddock in Austria this past weekend, the former Formula 1 supremo reconnecting with old friends and foes wearing his Honorary President credentials and of course providing sound bites to the media.
This season has been a seesaw of a contest with Ferrari driver Sebastian Vettel and Mercedes' Lewis Hamilton slugging it out with very little between them, but Ecclestone is backing his backgammon pal Vettel to triumph this year, "I wish that Sebastian wins the title with Ferrari."
"He was close last year and deserves it. In addition, Formula 1 could do without Mercedes winning," added Ecclestone. "I still watch every race but now I am more relaxed than before."
"The races are good and the season is even more exciting than last year. Finally, Ferrari has made the leap I have been waiting for so long. Red Bull is fighting at the front again."
"Fans are getting value for their money again. I like that because I want Formula 1 to thrive," insisted the man who once ruled the sport with an iron fist and as a result became a billionaire many times over.
Big Question: Can Formula 1 do without Mercedes winning?
