Amid a downturn in fortunes that began almost five years ago, Fernando Alonso can take pride in the fact that no Formula 1 driver has driven more race miles or completed more grand prix races than he has.
When Alonso crossed the line at the Austrian Grand Prix, the McLaren driver had completed 81,394 kilometres (km) in grand prix race mode, surpassing the great Michael Schumacher's previous record of 81,208 km.
Of the current drivers on the grid, Kimi Raikkonen has covered the next highest race distance with 72,915 km, while Lewis Hamilton has 61,556 km on the clock.
The Spaniard's name is also top of the record list of grand prix finishes, his eighth place at Red Bull Ring was his 238th grand prix finish, one more than Schumacher managed.
Austria also marked Alonso's 300th grand prix start which puts him fifth on the all-time most Formula 1 starts list which is topped by Rubens Barrichello who made 323 starts in the top flight. On the current grid, Raikkonen has the next most starts with 280 on his record book.
Alonso made his Formula 1 debut at the 2001 Australian Grand Prix, on that day other rookie debutants included Kimi Raikkonen, Juan Pablo Montoya and Enrique Bernoldi.
